Brewster, Sir David, K.H., created D.C.L. 21 June, 1832, natural philosopher and scientific writer, created M.A. Edinburgh University 1800, editor of the Edinburgh Magazine 1802, a preacher 1804, created LL.D. St. Andrew's 1807, created M.A. Cantab 1833, editor of the Encyclopædia Britannica, F.R.S. 1815, invented the kaleidoscope, principal of St. Salvator and St. Leonard, in the University of St. Andrews 1838, vice-chancellor Edinburgh University 1860, president Royal Society of Edinburgh 1864, knighted 8 March, 1832 (son of James Brewster, rector of Jedburgh Grammar School), died 10 Feb., 1868.
