Newark 1832 to Dec., 1845, Oxford University, July, 1847, to July, 1865, South Lancashire, July, 1865, to Nov., 1868, Greenwich, Nov., 1868, to March, 1880, and for Edinburghshire since 1880, declined an earldom June, 1885, premier 1868-74, 1880-5, and Feb. to July, 1886, etc., lord rector Edinburgh University 1859-65.
