Maitland, James, born at Ratho, Mid Lothian, s. James, Earl of Lauderdale. Trinity Coll., matric. 13 Jane, 1775, aged 16; 8th Earl of Lauderdale, a student of Lincoln's Inn 1777, a member of the Faculty of Advocates, Scotland, 1780, M.P. Newport, Cornwall, 1780-4, Malmesbury 1784-9, a representative peer 1790, until created an English peer 22 Feb., 1806, died 15 Sep., 1839. See Foster's Peerage.
