Bemme, f., ‘slice of bread,’ first occurs in ModHG.; a LG. and MidG. word, a deriv. of the dial. bammen, ‘to eat,’ which may have been *bazmôn in Goth., and is perhaps primit. allied to the Sans. root bhas, ‘to chew.’
