Fähndrich, Fähnrich, ‘cornet, ensign,’ like Gänserich, first formed in ModHG. from the shorter MidHG. word; comp. MidHG. vęnre (the ModHG. d is excrescent, as in schaudern, minder), OHG. faneri, m., ‘standard-bearer.’
