Flitzbogen, m., ‘crossbow,’ first occurs in early ModHG. from LG.; comp. Du. flitsboog, ‘crossbow,’ from Du. flits, ‘javelin’; hence Fr. flèche, ‘arrow,’ and its Romance cognates are probably derived.
