Spatz, m., ‘sparrow,’ from the equiv. late MidHG. spatz, m.; a pet term peculiar to HG., and allied to MidHG. spar (see Sperling). The assumed orig. connection with the equiv. Lat. passer (for *spat-ter?) is less probable.
