NASA Astronaut Mike Fincke and ESA European Space Agency Astronaut Luca Parmitano reflect on the inspiration that actor Leonard Nimoy’s character Mr. Spock in the television series Star Trek had on scientists, engineers, space explorers and fans around the globe.

Mike Fincke: Hello, I'm NASA Astronaut, Mike Fincke.

Luca Parmitano: And I'm European Space Agency Astronaut, Luca Parmitano.

Fincke: We were very saddened to hear of the passing of the actor Leonard Nimoy. Leonard's character, Mr. Spock, inspired generations of NASA scientists and engineers. As well as engineers, scientists, and Star Trek fans, across the planet. And as we at NASA along with our international partners explore the Moon, Mars, and beyond, we'll take the spirit and energy that Leonard brought to his character, Mr. Spock, along with us. Live Long and Prosper.

Parmitano: The message of Star Trek, is one of cooperation and integration. Mr. Spock, a Vulcan from a different planet was fully integrated, in his crew of humans and non-humans. We at the European Space Agency believe in that message, and working with our international partners, we will take that message with us as we go beyond to explore space, for humanity and for our planet.
