John of the Cross
(1542–1591)
A Spanish mystic and Carmelite friar who was a major figure in the Catholic Reformation. Beatified in 1675 by Pope Clement X and canonized in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII. His birth name was Juan de Yepes y Álvarez.
