Notes: CWGC has no record of his MiD ; MiD London Gazette 5/11/15 p.11000 ; Born October 26th 1887, in London, the second and only surviving son of Thomas, 4th Lord Ribblesdale, P.C., formerly Lord in Waiting to Queen Victoria and retired Captain of The Rifle Brigade, and Lady Charlotte Monckton (née Tennant) Lister, of Gisburne Park, Lancashire (daughter of Sir Charles Tennant, Bart., and sister of Mrs. Asquith, wife of the Prime Minister). Younger brother of Captain Thomas Lister DSO, 10th (Prince of Wales’s Own Royal) Hussars (KIA at Jidballi, Somaliland, on January 10th 1904). He was educated at Eton and entered Balliol College, Oxford, in 1906 with a Williams Exhibition in Classics. In 1910 he was appointed to the Foreign Service and in 1911 he became a secretary, serving in the British Embassy in Rome until 1913 then in Constantinople until the outbreak of war in August 1914. In autumn 1914 he obtained permission from the Foreign Service to join the army, being gazetted Lieutenant and being appointed Interpreter in the 1st County of London Yeomanry (Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars). In February 1915 he went to Gallipoli to assume the post of interpreter on HMT "Franconia" and was attached as Staff Interpreter to the Royal Naval Division. He applied for a transfer to the Hood Battalion to be amongst his friends, Rupert Brooke, Arthur Asquith, Patrick Shaw-Stewart, “Cleg” Kelly and Bernard Freyberg. (Cousin of Arthur Asquith & nephew of PM Herbert Asquith).
