This James, grandfather of Pat, had various sons; his eldest, Robert, married Miss Klyne, of the Hotel Castlebar, and had issue. Robert's eldest son was James Klyne O'Dowd, who was solicitor to the Board of Trade, and one of Dan O'Connell's lawyers. His son, Sir James O'Dowd, was a noted lawyer, and became Deputy Judge Advocate Genreal of England, and he and Lieutenant Colonel Brabazon of Swinford and Sir Thomas Lipton became the close personal friends of the late King Edward. O'Dowd, however, was only associated with him when he was Prince of Wales, death severing the friendship. This O'Dowd left no lawful issue. John Klyne O'Dowd had another son, who was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Dragoon Guards. His second son, harry lives in Dublin. He is a retired officer of the Royal Navy, and unmarried. Another son is a Professor in Galway.
