SUMMARY

The work of the Irish-born phonetician James Lecky (1855-90) has been unjustly neglected. A summary is given of his life and work, especially his work in phonetics, which covered descriptive phonetics, verse rhythm and phonetic notation.

Obituary[edit]

  • The Times, Friday, Apr 04, 1890; pg. 8; Issue 32977

The death is announced, at the early age of 34, of Mr. James Lecky, formerly of the Exchequer and Audit Department. Up to two years ago he was a familiar figure at the meetings of the Philological and other kindred societies in London and Cambridge, but since that time he suffered from a painful disease which has now proved fatal. When Sir George Grove was engaged in editing his "Dictionary of Music" some years ago he obtained from Mr. Lecky a very valuable and erudite contribution on "Temperament" for that work. To his friends and colleagues in research it is a matter of much regret that the career of one who made to great stores of knowledge on a variety of topics very unusual conversational powers should have so soon cut short.
