DEATH OF MAJOR SHEPHERD.-Our Melbourne correspondent writes:—"I regret to have to announce the sudden death at his private residence, Merton-crescent, South Melbourne, on Tuesday night of Mr. Richard Shepherd, artist of the lithographic branch of the Mining department. Mr. Shepherd's appointment dates from January, 1859, so that he had been in the Government service for the long period of 20 years and a half, and during that time he has gained the greatest confidence of the department, as well as the respect and esteem of all his brother officers. The deceased gentleman also took an active part in the old volunteer movement, and held the rank of Major in the Emerald Hill Artillery. The cause of death was heart disease, from which he was known to have been suffering for some time past, although he attended to his official duties up to yesterday. He was 60 years of ago, and leaves a widow and a grown up family." We may add that a great portion of the beautiful lithographic work on the geological maps was performed by the late artist.
