Obituary[edit]

  • excerpt from The Leeds Mercury, Saturday, September 22, 1900; Issue 19492.

Mr. Robert Langton, for many years a well-known resident of Manchester, died at Bexley, Kent, on the 13th inst. He was intended or the legal profession, but after two years of articles with the Town Clerk of Gravesend, he relinquished law or art, and was articled to a wood engraver. he was an enthusiastic admirer of Bewick, and brought good taste as well as a skilful hand to his work. He illustrated many works dealing with archæological, topographical, and historical subjects. Scientific writers also sought the aid of his skill, which was placed at the service of Dr. Gamgee's "Physiology," of "The Moon," by the late R. A. Proctor, and "The Diseases of the Nervous System," by Dr. James Ross. He was also the author of "The Childhood ad Youth of Charles Dickens," with numerous illustrations. In 1853-4 Mr. Langton, in conjunction with the Rev. Cannon Beechey, then of Worsley, made a number of experiments which resulted in the application of photography to wood engraving, since that time so generally practised. Aged. 75.
