Entered the Burma Civil Service, 1870; District Superintendent of Police, 1880; Assistant Commissioner, Upper Burma, 1886; Deputy Commissioner, 1890; Commissioner of Division, 1902. Served as Political Officer, 3rd Burma War, 1885-93 (despatches, thanks of Governor-General of India in Council). C.I.E., 1904. Retired, 1905. Major, Indian Auxiliary Forces. V.D., 1903. Served in the Great War, 1914-19 (Major, R. Sussex Regt.; President of Central Quartering Committee; wounded at Loos, 1915; mentioned in despatches). Invalided from the Army, 1919 (aged 69), on account of ill-health caused by wounds. Married Lydia Sophia, dau. of Alfred Woodward, of London, and had issue.
