For with their lives they have brought it"; and he was not willing to drink it; these [things] the three mighty ones did. 20 And Abishai brother of Joab, he has been head of the three: and he is lifting up his spear against three hundred—wounded, and has a name among three. 21 Of the three he is more honored than the [other] two, and becomes their head; but he has not come to the [first] three. 22 Benaiah son of Jehoiada, son of a man of valor, of great deeds, from Kabzeel: he has struck the two lion-like Moabites, and he has gone down and struck the lion in the midst of the pit, in the day of snow. 23 And he has struck the man, the Egyptian, a man of [great] measure—five by the cubit—and in the hand of the Egyptian [is] a spear like a weavers' beam, and he goes down to him with a rod, and violently takes away the spear out of the hand of the Egyptian, and slays him with his own spear. 24 These [things] Benaiah son of Jehoiada has done, and has a name among the three mighty ones. 25 Of the thirty, behold, he [is] honored, but he has not come to the [first] three, and David sets him over his guard. 26 And the mighty ones of the forces [are] Asahel brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo of Beth-Lehem, 27 Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite, 28 Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abi-Ezer the Annethothite, 29 Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite, 30 Maharai the Netophathite, Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite, 31 Ithai son of Ribai of Gibeah, of the sons of Benjamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite, 32 Hurai of the brooks of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite, 33 Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite, 34 the sons of Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan son of Shage the Hararite, 35 Ahiam son of Sacar the Hararite, Eliphal son of Ur, 36 Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahijah the Pelonite, 37 Hezor the Carmelite, Naarai son of Ezbai, 38 Joel brother of Nathan, Mibhar son of Haggeri, 39 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, bearer of the weapons of Joab son of Zeruiah, 40 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 41 Uriah the Hittite, Zabad son of Ahlai, 42 Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, head of the Reubenites, and thirty by him, 43 Hanan son of Maachah, and Joshaphat the Mithnite, 44 Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jehiel sons of Hothan the Aroerite, 45 Jediael son of Shimri, and his brother Joha the Tizite, 46 Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai, and Joshaviah, sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite, 47 Eliel, and Obed, and Jaasiel the Mesobaite.

Peace to you, and peace to your helper, for your God has helped you"; and David receives them, and puts them among the heads of the troop. 19 And [some] from Manasseh have defected to David in his coming with the Philistines against Israel to battle—and they did not help them, for by counsel the princes of the Philistines sent him away, saying, "He defects with our heads to his master Saul." 20 In his going to Ziglag there have fallen to him from Manasseh: Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zillthai, heads of the thousands who [are] of Manasseh; 21 and they have helped with David over the troop, for all of them [are] mighty men of valor, and they are captains in the host, 22 for at that time, day by day, they come to David to help him, until it is a great camp, like a camp of God. 23 And these [are] the numbers of the head, of the armed men of the host; they have come to David at Hebron to turn around the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the mouth of YHWH. 24 The sons of Judah, carrying buckler and spear, [are] six thousand and eight hundred, armed ones of the host. 25 Of the sons of Simeon, mighty men of valor for the host, [are] seven thousand and one hundred. 26 Of the sons of Levi [are] four thousand and six hundred; 27 and Jehoiada [is] the leader of the Aaronite, and with him [are] three thousand and seven hundred, 28 and Zadok, a young man, a mighty man of valor, and of the house of his father [are] twenty-two heads. 29 And of the sons of Benjamin, brothers of Saul, [are] three thousand, and until now their greater part are keeping the charge of the house of Saul. 30 And of the sons of Ephraim [are] twenty thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valor, men of renown, according to the house of their fathers. 31 And of the half of the tribe of Manasseh [are] eighteen thousand, who have been defined by name, to come to cause David to reign. 32 And of the sons of Issachar, having understanding for the times, to know what Israel should do; their heads [are] two hundred, and all their brothers [are] at their command. 33 Of Zebulun, going forth to the host, arranging battle with all instruments of battle, [are] fifty thousand, and keeping rank without a double heart. 34 And of Naphtali, one thousand heads, and with them, with buckler and spear, [are] thirty-seven thousand. 35 And of the Danite, arranging battle, [are] twenty-eight thousand and six hundred. 36 And of Asher, going forth to the host, to arrange battle, [are] forty thousand. 37 And from beyond the Jordan, of the Reubenite, and of the Gadite, and of the half of the tribe of Manasseh, with all instruments of the host for battle, [are] one hundred and twenty thousand. 38 All these [are] men of war, keeping rank—they have come to Hebron with a perfect heart, to cause David to reign over all Israel, and also all the rest of Israel [are] of one heart, to cause David to reign, 39 and they are there, with David, three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers have prepared for them. 40 And also those near to them—to Issachar, and Zebulun, and Naphtali—are bringing in bread on donkeys, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen—food of fine flour, fig-cakes and grape-cakes, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep, in abundance, for joy [is] in Israel.

Chapter 13[edit]

1 And David consults with the heads of the thousands and of the hundreds, [and] with every leader, 2 and David says to all the assembly of Israel, "If it is good to you, and it has broken forth from our God YHWH—we send to our brothers, those left in all the lands of Israel, and the priests and the Levites with them in the cities of their outskirts, and they are gathered to us, 3 and we bring around the Ark of our God to us, for we did not seek Him in the days of Saul." 4 And all the assembly says to do so, for the thing is right in the eyes of all the people. 5 And David assembles all Israel from Shihor of Egypt even to the entering in of Hamath, to bring in the Ark of God from Kirjath-Jearim, 6 and David goes up, and all Israel, to Ba'alah, to Kirjath-Jearim that [belongs] to Judah, to bring up from there the Ark of God, YHWH, inhabiting the cherubim, where the Name is called on. 7 And they place the Ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio are leading the cart, 8 and David and all Israel are playing before God, with all strength, and with songs, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets. 9 And they come to the threshing-floor of Chidon, and Uzza puts forth his hand to seize the Ark, for the oxen were released, 10 and the anger of YHWH is kindled against Uzza, and He strikes him, because that he has put forth his hand on the Ark, and he dies there before God. 11 And it is displeasing to David, because YHWH has made a breach on Uzza, and one calls that place "Breach of Uzza" to this day. 12 And David fears God on that day, saying, "How do I bring the Ark of God to me?" 13 And David has not turned aside the Ark to himself, to the City of David, and turns it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 14 And the Ark of God dwells with the household of Obed-Edom, in his house, three months, and YHWH blesses the house of Obed-Edom, and all that he has.

Chapter 14[edit]

1 And Huram king of Tyre sends messengers to David, and cedar-wood, and craftsmen of walls, and craftsmen of wood, to build a house for him. 2 And David knows that YHWH has established him for king over Israel, because of the lifting up on high of his kingdom, for the sake of His people Israel. 3 And David takes wives again in Jerusalem, and David begets sons and daughters again; 4 and these [are] the names of the children whom he has in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon, 5 and Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpalet, 6 and Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia, 7 and Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphalet. 8 And the Philistines hear that David has been anointed for king over all Israel, and all the Philistines go up to seek David, and David hears, and goes out before them. 9 And the Philistines have come, and rush into the Valley of Rephaim, 10 and David asks of God, saying, "Do I go up against the Philistines—and have You given them into my hand?" And YHWH says to him, "Go up, and I have given them into your hand." 11 And they go up into Ba'al-Perazim, and David strikes them there, and David says, "God has broken up my enemies by my hand, like the breaking up of waters"; therefore they have called the name of that place Ba'al-Perazim. 12 And they leave their gods there, and David commands, and they are burned with fire. 13 And the Philistines add again, and rush into the valley, 14 and David asks again of God, and God says to him, "Do not go up after them, turn around from them, and you have come to them from the front [[or in front]] of the mulberries; 15 and it comes to pass, when you hear the sound of the stepping at the heads of the mulberries, then you go out into battle, for God has gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines." 16 And David does as God commanded him, and they strike the camp of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer; 17 and the name of David goes out into all the lands, and YHWH has put his fear on all the nations.

Chapter 15[edit]

1 And he makes houses for himself in the City of David, and prepares a place for the Ark of God, and stretches out a tent for it. 2 Then David said, "None [are] to carry the Ark of God, except the Levites, for YHWH has fixed on them to carry the Ark of God and to serve Him for all time." 3 And David assembles all Israel to Jerusalem, to bring up the Ark of YHWH to its place that he had prepared for it. 4 And David gathers the sons of Aaron and the Levites— 5 of sons of Kohath: Uriel the chief and one hundred and twenty of his brothers; 6 of sons of Merari: Asaiah the chief and two hundred and twenty of his brothers; 7 of sons of Gershom: Joel the chief and one hundred and thirty of his brothers; 8 of sons of Elizaphan: Shemaiah the chief and two hundred of his brothers; 9 of sons of Hebron: Eliel the chief and eighty of his brothers; 10 of sons of Uzziel: Amminadab the chief and one hundred and twelve of his brothers. 11 And David calls to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, and to the Levites, to Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab, 12 and says to them, "You [are] heads of the fathers of the Levites; sanctify yourselves, you and your brothers, and you have brought up the Ark of YHWH, God of Israel, to [the place] I have prepared for it; 13 because you [did] not [do it] at the first, our God YHWH made a breach on us, because we did not seek Him according to the ordinance." 14 And the priests and the Levites sanctify themselves to bring up the Ark of YHWH, God of Israel; 15 and sons of the Levites carry the Ark of God, as Moses commanded, according to the word of YHWH, above them with poles on their shoulder. 16 And David says to the heads of the Levites to appoint their brothers the singers, with instruments of song, psalteries, and harps, and cymbals, sounding, to lift up with the voice for joy. 17 And the Levites appoint Heman son of Joel, and of his brothers, Asaph son of Berechiah, and of the sons of Merari their brothers, Ethan son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their brothers, the seconds [in rank]: Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah; and Obed-Edom and Jeiel the gatekeepers; 19 and the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, [are] to sound with cymbals of bronze; 20 and Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jeheil, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries over the girls' [voices], 21 and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-Edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, to oversee with harps on the eighth. 22 And Chenaniah, head of the Levites, [is] over the burden; he instructs about the burden, for he [is] intelligent. 23 And Berechiah and Elkanah [are] gatekeepers for the Ark. 24 And Shebaniah, and Joshaphat, and Nethaneel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer the priests, are blowing with trumpets before the Ark of God; and Obed-Edom and Jehiah [are] gatekeepers for the Ark. 25 And it is David, and [the] elderly of Israel, and the heads of the thousands, who are going to bring up the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH from the house of Obed-Edom with joy; 26 and it comes to pass, in God's helping the Levites carrying the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH, that they sacrifice seven bullocks and seven rams. 27 And David is wrapped in an upper robe of fine linen, and all the Levites who are carrying the Ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah head of the burden of the singers; and an Ephod of linen [is] on David. 28 And all of Israel is bringing up the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH with shouting, and with the sound of a horn, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, sounding with psalteries and harps, 29 and it comes to pass, the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH is entering into the City of David, and Michal daughter of Saul is looking through the window, and sees King David dancing and playing, and despises him in her heart.

Chapter 16[edit]

1 And they bring in the Ark of God, and set it up in the midst of the tent that David has stretched out for it, and they bring burnt-offerings and peace-offerings near before God; 2 and David ceases from offering the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings, and blesses the people in the Name of YHWH, 3 and gives a portion to every man of Israel, both man and woman: to each a cake of bread, and a measure of wine, and a grape-cake. 4 And he puts before the Ark of YHWH, those ministering from the Levites, even to make mention of, and to thank, and to give praise to YHWH, God of Israel: 5 Asaph the head, and his second Zechariah; Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-Edom, and Jeiel, with instruments of psalteries, and with harps; and Asaph is sounding with cymbals; 6 and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests [are] continually [sounding] with trumpets before the Ark of the Covenant of God. 7 On that day, at that time, David has given at the beginning to give thanks to YHWH by the hand of Asaph and his brothers: 8 "Give thanks to YHWH, call on His Name, || Make His doings known among the peoples. 9 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him, || Meditate on all His wonders. 10 Boast yourselves in His Holy Name, || The heart of those seeking YHWH rejoices. 11 Seek YHWH and His strength, || Seek His face continually. 12 Remember His wonders that He did, || His signs, and the judgments of His mouth, 13 O seed of Israel, His servant, || O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones! 14 He [is] our God YHWH, || His judgments [are] in all the earth. 15 Remember His covenant for all time, || The word He commanded—To one thousand generations, 16 Which He has made with Abraham, || And His oath—to Isaac, 17 And He establishes it to Jacob for a statute, || To Israel [for] a perpetual covenant, 18 Saying, To you I give the land of Canaan, || The portion of your inheritance, 19 When you were few in number, || As a little thing, and sojourners in it. 20 And they go up and down, || From nation to nation, || And from a kingdom to another people. 21 He has not permitted any to oppress them, || And reproves kings on their account: 22 Do not come against My anointed ones, || And do no evil against My prophets. 23 Sing to YHWH, all the earth, || Proclaim His salvation from day to day. 24 Recount His glory among nations, || His wonders among all the peoples. 25 For great [is] YHWH, and greatly praised, || And He [is] fearful above all gods. 26 For all gods of the peoples [are] nothing, || And YHWH has made the heavens. 27 Splendor and majesty [are] before Him, || Strength and joy [are] in His place. 28 Ascribe to YHWH, you families of peoples, || Ascribe to YHWH glory and strength. 29 Ascribe to YHWH the glory of His Name, || Lift up a present, and come before Him. Bow yourselves to YHWH, || In the beauty of holiness. 30 Be pained before Him, all the earth; Also, the world is established, || It is not moved! 31 The heavens rejoice, and the earth is glad, || And they say among nations, YHWH has reigned! 32 The sea roars, and its fullness, || The field exults, and all that [is] in it, 33 Then trees of the forest sing, || From the presence of YHWH, || For He has come to judge the earth! 34 Give thanks to YHWH, for [He is] good, || For His kindness [is] for all time, 35 And say, Save us, O God of our salvation, || And gather us, and deliver us from the nations, || To give thanks to Your Holy Name, || To triumph in Your praise. 36 Blessed [is] YHWH, God of Israel, || From age to age"; And all the people say, "Amen," and have given praise to YHWH. 37 And he leaves there [those] of Asaph and of his brothers, before the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH, to minister before the Ark continually, according to the matter of a day in its day; 38 both Obed-Edom and their sixty-eight brothers, and Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun, and Hosah, for gatekeepers; 39 and Zadok the priest, and his brothers the priests, before the Dwelling Place of YHWH, in a high place that [is] in Gibeon, 40 to cause burnt-offerings to ascend continually to YHWH on the altar of burnt-offering, morning and evening, and for all that is written in the Law of YHWH that He charged on Israel. 41 And with them [are] Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest of those chosen, who were defined by name, to give thanks to YHWH, for His kindness [is] for all time; 42 and with them—Heman and Jeduthun—[are] trumpets and cymbals for those sounding, and instruments of the song of God, and the sons of Jeduthun [are] at the gate. 43 And all the people go, each to his house, and David turns around to bless his house.

Chapter 17[edit]

1 And it comes to pass as David sat in his house, that David says to Nathan the prophet, "Behold, I am dwelling in a house of cedars, and the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH [is] under curtains"; 2 and Nathan says to David, "All that [is] in your heart do, for God [is] with you." 3 And it comes to pass on that night that a word of God is to Nathan, saying, 4 "Go, and you have said to My servant David, Thus said YHWH: You do not build for Me the house to dwell in. 5 For I have not dwelt in a house from the day that I brought up Israel until this day, and I am [going] from tent to tent, and from the Dwelling Place. 6 Wherever I have walked up and down among all Israel, have I spoken a word with one of [the] judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed My people, saying, Why have you not built a house of cedars for Me? 7 And now, thus you say to My servant, to David, Thus said YHWH of Hosts: I have taken you from the habitation, from after the sheep, to be leader over My people Israel, 8 and I am with you wherever you have walked, and I cut off all your enemies from your presence, and have made a name for you like the name of the great ones who [are] in the earth. 9 And I have prepared a place for My people Israel, and planted it, and it has dwelt in its place, and is not troubled anymore, and the sons of perverseness do not add to wear it out as at first, 10 indeed, even from the days that I appointed judges over My people Israel. And I have humbled all your enemies, and I declare to you that YHWH builds a house for you. 11 And it has come to pass, when your days have been fulfilled to go with your fathers, that I have raised up your seed after you, who is of your sons, and I have established his kingdom; 12 he builds a house for Me, and I have established his throne for all time; 13 I am to him for a father, and he is to Me for a son, and I do not turn aside My kindness from him as I turned it aside from him who was before you, 14 and I have established him in My house, and in My kingdom for all time, and his throne is established for all time." 15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so spoke Nathan to David. 16 And David the king comes in and sits before YHWH, and says, "Who [am] I, O YHWH God, and what [is] my house, that You have brought me here? 17 And this is small in Your eyes, O God, and You speak concerning the house of Your servant far off, and have seen me as a type of the man who is on high, O YHWH God! 18 What more does David add to You for the honor of Your servant; and You have known Your servant. 19 O YHWH, for Your servant's sake, and according to Your own heart You have done all this greatness, to make known all these great things. 20 O YHWH, there is none like You, and there is no god except You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21 And who [is] as Your people Israel, one nation in the earth whom God has gone to ransom to Himself for a people, to make a great and fearful name for Yourself, to cast out nations from the presence of Your people whom You have ransomed out of Egypt? 22 Indeed, You appoint Your people Israel to Yourself for a people for all time, and You, O YHWH, have been to them for God. 23 And now, O YHWH, let the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant, and concerning his house, be steadfast for all time, and do as You have spoken; 24 and let it be steadfast, and Your Name is great for all time, saying, YHWH of Hosts, God of Israel, [is] God to Israel, and the house of Your servant David is established before You; 25 for You, O my God, have uncovered the ear of Your servant—to build a house for him, therefore Your servant has found [desire] to pray before You. 26 And now, YHWH, You [are] God Himself, and You speak this goodness concerning Your servant; 27 and now, You have been pleased to bless the house of Your servant, to be before You for all time; for You, O YHWH, have blessed, and it is blessed for all time."

Chapter 18[edit]

1 And it comes to pass after this, that David strikes the Philistines, and humbles them, and takes Gath and its small towns out of the hand of the Philistines; 2 and he strikes Moab, and the Moabites are servants to David, bringing a present. 3 And David strikes Hadarezer king of Zobah, at Hamath, in his going to establish his power by the Euphrates River, 4 and David captures from him one thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen, and David utterly destroys all the chariots, and leaves of them [only] one hundred chariots. 5 And Aram of Damascus comes to give help to Hadarezer king of Zobah, and David strikes twenty-two thousand men in Aram, 6 and David puts [garrisons] in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans are for servants to David, carrying a present, and YHWH gives salvation to David wherever he has gone. 7 And David takes the shields of gold that have been on the servants of Hadarezer, and brings them to Jerusalem; 8 and from Tibhath, and from Chun, cities of Hadarezer, David has taken very much bronze; with it Solomon has made the bronze sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of bronze. 9 And Tou king of Hamath hears that David has struck the whole force of Hadarezer king of Zobah, 10 and he sends his son Hadoram to King David, to ask of him of peace, and to bless him, because that he has fought against Hadarezer and strikes him (for Hadarezer had been a man of wars with Tou); and [with him were] all kinds of vessels, of gold, and silver, and bronze; 11 King David has also sanctified them to YHWH with the silver and the gold that he has taken from all the nations, from Edom, and from Moab, and from the sons of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek. 12 And Abishai son of Zeruiah has struck Edom in the Valley of Salt—eighteen thousand, 13 and he puts garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites are servants to David; and YHWH saves David wherever he has gone. 14 And David reigns over all Israel, and he is doing judgment and righteousness to all his people, 15 and Joab son of Zeruiah [is] over the host, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud [is] remembrancer, 16 and Zadok son of Ahitub and Abimelech son of Abiathar [are] priests, and Shavsha [is] scribe, 17 and Benaiah son of Jehoiada [is] over the Cherethite and the Pelethite, and the chief sons of David [are] at the hand of the king.

Chapter 19[edit]

1 And it comes to pass after this, that Nahash king of the sons of Ammon dies, and his son reigns in his stead, 2 and David says, "I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, for his father did kindness with me"; and David sends messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David come to the land of the sons of Ammon, to Hanun, to comfort him, 3 and the heads of the sons of Ammon say to Hanun, "Is David honoring your father in your eyes because he has sent comforters to you? Have his servants not come to you in order to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?" 4 And Hanun takes the servants of David and shaves them, and cuts their long robes in the midst, to the buttocks, and sends them away. 5 And [some] go and declare to David concerning the men, and he sends to meet them—for the men have been greatly ashamed—and the king says, "Dwell in Jericho until your beard is grown, then you have returned." 6 And the sons of Ammon see that they have made themselves abhorred by David, and Hanun and the sons of Ammon send one thousand talents of silver, to hire for themselves, from Aram-Naharaim, and from Aram-Maachah, and from Zobah, chariots and horsemen; 7 and they hire for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, and they come in and encamp before Medeba, and the sons of Ammon have been gathered out of their cities, and come to the battle. 8 And David hears, and sends Joab, and all the host of the mighty men, 9 and the sons of Ammon come out and set in array [for] battle at the opening of the city, and the kings who have come [are] by themselves in the field. 10 And Joab sees that the front of the battle has been to him, before and behind, and he chooses out of all the choice in Israel, and sets in array to meet Aram, 11 and he has given the remnant of the people into the hand of his brother Abishai, and they set in array to meet the sons of Ammon. 12 And he says, "If Aram is stronger than me, then you have been for salvation to me; and if the sons of Ammon are stronger than you, then I have saved you; 13 be strong, and we strengthen ourselves, for our people, and for the cities of our God, and YHWH does that which is good in His eyes." 14 And Joab draws near, and the people who [are] with him, before Aram to battle, and they flee from his face; 15 and the sons of Ammon have seen that Aram has fled, and they flee—they also—from the face of his brother Abishai, and go into the city. And Joab comes to Jerusalem. 16 And Aram sees that they have been struck before Israel, and send messengers, and bring out Aram that [is] beyond the River, and Shophach head of the host of Hadarezer [is] before them. 17 And it is declared to David, and he gathers all Israel, and passes over the Jordan, and comes to them, and sets in array against them; indeed, David sets in array [for] battle to meet Aram, and they fight with him; 18 and Aram flees from the face of Israel, and David slays seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand footmen of Aram, and he has put Shophach head of the host to death. 19 And the servants of Hadarezer see that they have been struck before Israel, and they make peace with David and serve him, and Aram has not been willing to help the sons of Ammon anymore.

Chapter 20[edit]

1 And it comes to pass, at the time of the turn of the year—at the time of the going out of the messengers—that Joab leads out the force of the host, and destroys the land of the sons of Ammon, and comes in and besieges Rabbah—David is abiding in Jerusalem—and Joab strikes Rabbah, and breaks it down. 2 And David takes the crown of their king from off his head, and finds it [to be] a talent of gold [in] weight, and [with] precious stone in it, and it is on the head of David; and he has brought out very much spoil of the city, 3 and he has brought out the people who [are] in it, and sets [them] to the saw, and to cutting instruments of iron, and to axes; and thus David does to all cities of the sons of Ammon, and David turns back—and all the people—to Jerusalem. 4 And it comes to pass after this, that war remains in Gezer with the Philistines; then Sibbechai the Hushathite has struck Sippai, of the children of the giant, and they are humbled. 5 And there is war with the Philistines again, and Elhanan son of Jair strikes Lahmi, brother of Goliath the Gittite, the wood of whose spear [is] like a weavers' beam. 6 And there is war in Gath again, and there is a man of [great] measure, and his fingers and his toes [are] six and six—twenty-four [total], and he has also been born to the giant. 7 And he reproaches Israel, and Jonathan son of Shimea, brother of David, strikes him. 8 These were born to the giant in Gath, and they fall by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

Chapter 21[edit]

1 Then Satan stands up against Israel, and persuades David to number Israel, 2 and David says to Joab and to the heads of the people, "Go, number Israel from Beer-Sheba even to Dan, and bring [the account] to me, and I know their number." 3 And Joab says, "YHWH adds to His people as they are one hundred times; are they not, my lord, O king, all of them for servants to my lord? Why does my lord seek this? Why is he for a cause of guilt to Israel?" 4 And the word of the king [is] severe against Joab, and Joab goes out, and goes up and down in all Israel, and comes to Jerusalem. 5 And Joab gives the account of the numbering of the people to David, and all Israel is one million and one hundred thousand, each drawing sword, and Judah [is] four hundred and seventy thousand, each drawing sword. 6 And he has not numbered Levi and Benjamin in their midst, for the word of the king was abominable with Joab. 7 And it is evil in the eyes of God concerning this thing, and He strikes Israel, 8 and David says to God, "I have sinned exceedingly in that I have done this thing; and now, please cause the iniquity of Your servant to pass away, for I have acted very foolishly." 9 And YHWH speaks to Gad, seer of David, saying, 10 "Go, and you have spoken to David, saying, Thus said YHWH: I am extending three [choices] to you; choose one of these for yourself, and I do [it] to you." 11 And Gad comes to David and says to him, "Thus said YHWH: Take for yourself— 12 either famine for three years, or three months to be consumed from the face of your adversaries (even [for] the sword of your enemies to overtake), or three days of the sword of YHWH (even pestilence in the land, and a messenger of YHWH destroying in all the border of Israel); and now, see; what word do I return to Him who is sending me?" 13 And David says to Gad, "I am greatly distressed, please let me fall into the hand of YHWH, for His mercies [are] very many, and do not let me fall into the hand of man." 14 And YHWH gives a pestilence in Israel, and there falls from Israel seventy thousand men, 15 and God sends a messenger to Jerusalem to destroy it, and as he is destroying, YHWH has seen, and is comforted concerning the calamity, and says to the messenger who [is] destroying, "Enough now, cease your hand." And the messenger of YHWH is standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, 16 and David lifts up his eyes, and sees the messenger of YHWH standing between the earth and the heavens, and his sword [is] drawn in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem, and David falls, and the elderly, covered with sackcloth, on their faces. 17 And David says to God, "Did I not command to number the people? Indeed, it [is] I who have sinned, and done great evil: and these, the flock, what did they do? O YHWH, my God, please let Your hand be on me, and on the house of my father, and not on Your people—to be plagued." 18 And the messenger of YHWH commanded to Gad to say to David, "Surely David goes up to raise an altar to YHWH in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite." 19 And David goes up by the word of Gad, that he spoke in the Name of YHWH. 20 And Ornan turns back and sees the messenger, and his four sons [are] with him hiding themselves, and Ornan is threshing wheat. 21 And David comes to Ornan, and Ornan looks attentively and sees David, and goes out from the threshing-floor, and bows himself to David—face to the earth. 22 And David says to Ornan, "Give the place of the threshing-floor to me, and I build an altar to YHWH in it; give it to me for full price, and the plague is restrained from the people." 23 And Ornan says to David, "Take [it] to yourself, and my lord the king does that which is good in his eyes; see, I have given the oxen for burnt-offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for a present; I have given the whole." 24 And King David says to Ornan, "No, for I surely buy [it] for full price; for I do not lift up that which is yours to YHWH, so as to offer a burnt-offering without cost." 25 And David gives to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold [in] weight for the place; 26 and David builds an altar to YHWH there, and offers burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and calls to YHWH, and He answers him from the heavens with fire on the altar of the burnt-offering. 27 And YHWH speaks to the messenger, and he turns back his sword to its sheath. 28 At that time, when David sees that YHWH has answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrifices there; 29 and the Dwelling Place of YHWH that Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt-offering, [are] at that time at a high place in Gibeon; 30 and David is not able to go before it to seek God, for he has been afraid because of the sword of the messenger of YHWH.

Chapter 22[edit]

1 And David says, "This is the house of YHWH God, and this [is] the altar for burnt-offering for Israel." 2 And David says to gather the sojourners who [are] in the land of Israel, and appoints hewers to hew hewn-stones to build a house of God. 3 And David has prepared iron in abundance for nails for leaves of the gates and for couplings, and bronze in abundance—there is no weighing, 4 and cedar-trees without number, for the Zidonians and the Tyrians brought in cedar-trees in abundance to David. 5 And David says, "My son Solomon [is] a youth and tender, and the house to be built for YHWH [is] to be made exceedingly great, for renown and for beauty to all the lands; now let me prepare for it"; and David prepares in abundance before his death. 6 And he calls for his son Solomon, and charges him to build a house for YHWH, God of Israel, 7 and David says to his son Solomon, "As for me, it has been with my heart to build a house for the Name of my God YHWH, 8 and the word of YHWH [is] against me, saying, You have shed blood in abundance, and you have made great wars; you do not build a house for My Name, for you have shed much blood to the earth before Me. 9 Behold, a son is born to you; he is a man of rest, and I have given rest to him from all his surrounding enemies, for Solomon is his name, and I give peace and quietness to Israel in his days; 10 he builds a house for My Name, and he is to Me for a son, and I [am] to him for a father, and I have established the throne of his kingdom over Israel for all time. 11 Now my son, YHWH is with you, and you have prospered, and have built the house of your God YHWH, as He spoke concerning you. 12 Only, may YHWH give wisdom and understanding to you, and charge you concerning Israel, even to keep the Law of your God YHWH; 13 then you prosper, if you observe to do the statutes and the judgments that YHWH charged Moses with concerning Israel; be strong and courageous; do not fear, nor be cast down. 14 And behold, in my affliction I have prepared for the house of YHWH one hundred thousand talents of gold, and one million talents of silver; and of bronze and of iron there is no weighing, for it has been in abundance; and I have prepared wood and stones, and you add to them. 15 And with you in abundance [are] workmen, hewers and craftsmen of stone and of wood, and every skillful man for every work. 16 Of the gold, of the silver, and of the bronze, and of the iron, there is no number; arise and do, and YHWH is with you." 17 And David gives charge to all heads of Israel to give help to his son Solomon, [saying], 18 "Is your God YHWH not with you? Indeed, He has given rest to you all around, for He has given the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land has been subdued before His people. 19 Now give your heart and your soul to seek for your God YHWH, and rise and build the sanctuary of YHWH God, to bring in the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH, and the holy vessels of God, to the house that is built for the Name of YHWH."

Chapter 23[edit]

1 And David was old and satisfied with days, and he causes his son Solomon to reign over Israel, 2 and gathers all the heads of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites; 3 and the Levites are numbered from a son of thirty years and upward, and their number, for their counted heads, is of thirty-eight thousand mighty men. 4 Of these, twenty-four thousand [are] to preside over the work of the house of YHWH, and six thousand officers and judges, 5 and four thousand gatekeepers, and four thousand giving praise to YHWH, "with instruments that I made for praising," [says David.] 6 And David distributes them into divisions of the sons of Levi—of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 7 Of the Gershonite: Laadan and Shimei. 8 Sons of Laadan: the head [is] Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel—three. 9 Sons of Shimei: Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran—three; these [are] heads of the fathers of Laadan. 10 And sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah; these [are] the four sons of Shimei. 11 And Jahath is the head, and Zizah the second, and Jeush and Beriah have not multiplied sons, and they become the house of a father by one numbering. 12 Sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel—four. 13 Sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron is separated for his sanctifying the Holy of Holies, he and his sons, for all time, to make incense before YHWH, to serve Him, and to bless in His Name for all time. 14 As for Moses, the man of God, his sons are called after the tribe of Levi. 15 Sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. 16 Sons of Gershom: Shebuel the head. 17 And sons of Eliezer are Rehabiah the head, and Eliezer had no other sons, and the sons of Rehabiah have multiplied exceedingly. 18 Sons of Izhar: Shelomith the head. 19 Sons of Hebron: Jeriah the head, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. 20 Sons of Uzziel: Micah the head, and Ishshiah the second. 21 Sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi; sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. 22 And Eleazar dies, and he had no sons, but daughters, and their brothers, sons of Kish, take them. 23 Sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth—three. 24 These [are] sons of Levi, by the house of their fathers, heads of the fathers, by their appointments, in the number of names, by their counted heads, doing the work for the service of the house of YHWH, from a son of twenty years and upward, 25 for David said, "YHWH, God of Israel, has given rest to His people, and He dwells in Jerusalem for all time"; 26 and also of the Levites, "None [are] to carry the Dwelling Place and all its vessels for its service"; 27 for by the last words of David they [took] the number of the sons of Levi from a son of twenty years and upward, 28 for their station [is] at the side of the sons of Aaron, for the service of the house of YHWH, over the courts, and over the chambers, and over the cleansing of every holy thing, and the work of the service of the house of God, 29 and for the bread of the arrangement, and for fine flour for present, and for the thin unleavened cakes, and for [the work of] the pan, and for that which is stirred, and for all [liquid] measure and [solid] measure; 30 and to stand, morning by morning, to give thanks, and to give praise to YHWH, and so at evening; 31 and for all the burnt-offerings—burnt-offerings to YHWH for Sabbaths, for new moons, and for appointed times, by number, according to the ordinance on them continually, before YHWH. 32 And they have kept the charge of the Tent of Meeting, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of their brothers, the sons of Aaron, for the service of the house of YHWH.

Chapter 24[edit]

1 And [these are] their divisions, of the sons of Aaron. [The] sons of Aaron [are] Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 2 And Nadab dies—and Abihu—in the presence of their father, and they had no sons, and Eleazar and Ithamar act as priests. 3 And David distributes them—and Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar—according to their office in their service; 4 and there are found of the sons of Eleazar more for heads of the mighty men than of the sons of Ithamar; and they distribute them. Chapter 28[edit]

1 And David assembles all the heads of Israel, heads of the tribes, and heads of the divisions who are serving the king, and heads of the thousands, and heads of the hundreds, and heads of all the substance and possessions of the king, and of his sons, with the officers and the mighty ones, and of every mighty man of valor—to Jerusalem. 2 And David the king rises on his feet and says, "Hear me, my brothers and my people, I [had it] with my heart to build a house of rest for the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH, and for the footstool of our God, and I prepared to build, 3 and God has said to me, You do not build a house for My Name, for you [are] a man of wars, and you have shed blood. 4 And YHWH, God of Israel, fixes on me out of all the house of my father to be for king over Israel for all time, for He has fixed on Judah for a leader, and in the house of Judah, the house of my father, and among the sons of my father, He has been pleased with me to make [me] king over all Israel; 5 and out of all my sons—for YHWH has given many sons to me—He also fixes on my son Solomon, to sit on the throne of the kingdom of YHWH over Israel, 6 and says to me, Your son Solomon builds My house and My courts, for I have fixed on him [to be] to Me for a son, and I am to him for a father. 7 And I have established his kingdom for all time, if he is strong to do My commands and My judgments, as at this day. 8 And now, before the eyes of all Israel, the assembly of YHWH, and in the ears of our God, keep and seek all the commands of your God YHWH, so that you possess this good land, and have caused your sons to inherit after you for all time. 9 And you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind, for YHWH is seeking all hearts, and He is understanding every imagination of the thoughts; if you seek Him, He is found by you, and if you forsake Him, He casts you off forever. 10 See, now, for YHWH has fixed on you to build a house for a sanctuary; be strong, and do." 11 And David gives to his son Solomon the pattern of the porch, and of its houses, and of its treasures, and of its upper chambers, and of its innermost chambers, and of the house of the atonement; 12 and the pattern of all that has been with him by the Spirit, for the courts of the house of YHWH, and for all the surrounding chambers, for the treasures of the house of God, and for the treasures of the things sacrificed; 13 and for the divisions of the priests and of the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of YHWH, and for all vessels of service of the house of YHWH, 14 even gold by weight, for [things of] gold, for all instruments of every service; for all instruments of silver by weight, for all instruments of every service; 15 and [by] weight for the lampstands of gold, and their lamps of gold, by weight [for] lampstand and lampstand, and its lamps; and for the lampstands of silver, by weight for a lampstand and its lamps, according to the service of lampstand and lampstand; 16 and the gold [by] weight for tables of the arrangement, for table and table, and silver for the tables of silver; 17 and the forks, and the bowls, and the cups of pure gold, and for the basins of gold, by weight for basin and basin, and for the basins of silver, by weight for basin and basin, 18 and for the altar of incense, refined gold by weight, and for the pattern of the chariot of the cherubim of gold, spreading and covering over the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH. 19 The whole [is] in writing from the hand of YHWH, "He caused me to understand all the work of the pattern," [said David.] 20 And David says to his son Solomon, "Be strong and courageous, and do; do not fear nor be frightened, for YHWH God, my God, [is] with you; He does not fail you, nor forsake you, to the completion of all the work of the service of the house of YHWH. 21 And behold, divisions of the priests and of the Levites [are] for all the service of the house of God; and with you in all work [is] every willing one with wisdom, for every service; and the heads and all the people [are] according to all your words."

Chapter 29[edit]

1 And David the king says to all the assembly, "My son Solomon—the one on whom God has fixed—[is] young and tender, and the work [is] great, for the palace is not for man, but for YHWH God; 2 and with all my power I have prepared for the house of my God, the gold for [things of] gold, and the silver for [things of] silver, and the bronze for [things of] bronze, the iron for [things of] iron, and the wood for [things of] wood, shoham stones, and settings, and stones of painting and of diverse colors, and all [kinds of] precious stone, and stones of white marble, in abundance. 3 And again, because of my delighting in the house of my God, the substance I have—a peculiar treasure of gold and silver—I have given for the house of my God, even over and above all I have prepared for the holy house: 4 three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses, 5 even gold for [things of] gold, and silver for [things of] silver, and for all the work by the hand of craftsmen; and who [is] he that is offering to willingly consecrate his hand to YHWH today?" 6 And the heads of the fathers, and the heads of the tribes of Israel, and the heads of the thousands, and of the hundreds, and of the heads of the work of the king, offer willingly. 7 And they give for the service of the house of God five thousand talents and ten thousand drams of gold, and ten thousand talents of silver, and eighteen thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand talents of iron; 8 and he with whom stones are found has given [them] to the treasury of the house of YHWH, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. 9 And the people rejoice because of their offering willingly, for with a perfect heart they have offered willingly to YHWH; and David the king has also rejoiced [with] great joy. 10 And David blesses YHWH before the eyes of all the assembly, and David says, "Blessed [are] You, YHWH, God of Israel, our Father, from age even to age. 11 To You, O YHWH, [is] the greatness, and the might, and the beauty, and the victory, and the splendor, because of all in the heavens and in the earth; to You, O YHWH, [is] the kingdom, and He who is lifting up Himself over all for head; 12 and the riches, and the honor [are] from before You, and You are ruling over all, and in Your hand [is] power and might, and [it is] in Your hand to make great and to give strength to all. 13 And now, our God, we are giving thanks to You, and giving praise to Your beautiful Name; 14 indeed, because who [am] I, and who [are] my people, that we retain power to offer thus willingly? But the whole [is] from You, and we have given to You out of Your [own] hand; 15 for we [are] sojourners and settlers before You, like all our fathers; our days on the land [are] as a shadow, and there is none abiding. 16 O our God YHWH, all this store [with] which we have prepared to build a house for You, for Your Holy Name, [is] out of Your [own] hand, and the whole [is] of You. 17 And I have known, my God, that You are trying the heart, and desire uprightness; I, in the uprightness of my heart, have willingly offered all these; and now, I have seen Your people who are found here with joy to offer willingly to You. 18 O YHWH, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep this for all time for the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of Your people, and prepare their heart for You; 19 and give a perfect heart to my son Solomon, to keep Your commands, Your testimonies, and Your statutes, and to do the whole, even to build the palace [for] which I have prepared." 20 And David says to all the assembly, "Now bless your God YHWH"; and all the assembly blesses YHWH, God of their fathers, and bows and pays respect to YHWH and to the king. 21 And they sacrifice sacrifices to YHWH, and cause burnt-offerings to ascend to YHWH on that next day: one thousand bullocks, one thousand rams, one thousand lambs, and their oblations, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. 22 And they eat and drink before YHWH on that day with great joy, and cause Solomon son of David to reign a second time, and anoint [him] before YHWH for leader, and Zadok for priest. 23 And Solomon sits on the throne of YHWH for king instead of his father David, and prospers, and all of Israel listens to him, 24 and all the heads, and the mighty men, and also all the sons of King David have given a hand under Solomon the king; 25 and YHWH makes Solomon exceedingly great before the eyes of all Israel, and puts on him the splendor of the kingdom that has not been on any king over Israel before him. 26 And David son of Jesse has reigned over all Israel, 27 and the days that he has reigned over Israel [are] forty years; he reigned in Hebron seven years, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-three; 28 and he dies in a good old age, satisfied with days, riches, and honor, and his son Solomon reigns in his stead. 29 And the matters of David the king, the first and the last, behold, they are written beside the matters of Samuel the seer, and beside the matters of Nathan the prophet, and beside the matters of Gad the seer, 30 with all his reign, and his might, and the times that went over him, and over Israel, and over all kingdoms of the lands.
