Kāvalgar (watchman). — Recorded, at times of census, as a sub-division of Ambalakāran, and title of Nattamān, Malaimān, and Sudarmān. The equivalent Kāvali is recorded as a sub-division of the Kammas. The Kāvalis, or watchers, in the Telugu country, are said to be generally Lingāyat Bōyas.†[1] The Telugu Mutrāchas are also called Kāvalgar. The village kāval system in the southern districts is discussed in the note on Maravans.
