TRINITY COLLEGE, a noteworthy college in Oxford, England; founded by Richard de Hoton, Prior of Durham, in 1290, for the education of student-monks of Durham. It was the first college after Balliol, which was founded by a layman, and was further remarkable as having been, like St. John's, founded by a Roman Catholic after the Reformation. It was rebuilt and improved by Sir Thomas Pope, in 1554. A Renaissance chapel was built in 1694, in which is a fine altar-piece, and a beautiful carved screen.
