Politics of the States, 1789–1880
According to the Vote for Governors.

Explanations. The plate above shows the politics of the Governors of each State from the date of its admission into the Union till the present time. The party indicated by each color can be ascertained by reference to the political diagram. To determine the politics of the Governors of any State, consult the plate in connection with a list of the names of the Governors; for example, the names of the New York Governors from 1847 to 1853 were John Young, H. Fish, and W. Hunt. The plate shows that the Governors of New York during that period were Whigs. (⅕ in. is taken for a year.)
