COLEMAN, JAMES GEORGE (1824–1883)

Born 1824 : was originally in the Marine Service : became partner with Mr. Macdowell, and later sole proprietor in a firm at Madras, which by great industry and application he made a flourishing and profitable business : did much for the social and public welfare of the community : joined the Volunteer movement at its commencement; became its Lt-Colonel and commanded the Duke's Own Artillery Corps : was an active member of the Municipal Corporation : and a member of the Madras Legislative Council from 1879 : contributed largely to charitable institutions; died at Royapuram, Madras. Dec. 14, 1883 : one of the foremost of the Eurasian Community of Madras.
