CROFT, SIR ALFRED WOODLEY (1841–)
Son of C. H. Croft : born Feb. 7, 1841 : educated at Mannamead School, Ply-mouth, and Exeter College, Oxford : entered the Bengal Educational Department, 1866 : Director of Public Instruction in Bengal, 1877–97 : Member of the Education Commission, 1882–3 : Member of the Bengal Legislative Council, 1887–92 : President of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, 1892–3 : Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University, 1894–6 : Hon. LL.D., 1897 : K.C.I.E., 1887.
