This cycle of lyrical miniatures written in 1979-1882 was originally titled by its author Posthuma, then Senilia. The latter title is sometimes used along with the title Poems in Prose which appeared as late as in October 11, 1882, less than a year before Ivan Turgenev's death. Constance Garnett follows the composition of the Russian edition of 1882, omitting only one poem. Many of Turgenev's other prose poems were unpublished until as late as 1929. The final poem of this cycle, The Russian Tongue has been the most well-known of them all, and is featured in multiple Russian language study courses for Russian schools as well as for learners of Russian as a foreign language.
