Summary
Description1911 EB Map Fig 12.png |
English: Caption: "Fig. 12.—The Map of Beatus (776)." A black-and-white simplified version of the map described by the Encyclopædia Britannica as from the 776 Commentaries on the Apocalypse written by Beatus, a Benedictine monk of Valcavado in Asturia. In fact, this version is a 1086 copy of Beatus of Liebana held by the Cathedral of Burgo d'Osma (MS 1, ff 35-36). The map includes Paradise, the unknown lands south of the Equator populated by men with a single large foot used as a shade, and portraits of the apostles credited for introducing Christianity to particular regions. For more discussion and other explanatory diagrams of the map, see the discussion at Cartographic Images. |
