Sidenotes or footnotes?
[edit]This work features notes in smaller type embedded in the text to the left or right of the page, or sometimes across the full width. I don't suppose you would call them 'sidenotes' as they're not in the margin. They mostly have an associated insertion point, as is generally the case with footnotes. So, which should it be?
Some of these notes are quite extensive, and sometimes close together (in terms of which part of the main text they are associated with). If ((sidenotes}} is used, this can give poor results when transcluded (e.g. depending on which on-screen layout is used, the adjacent 'notes' can appear overlaid on one another). Other options, such as the margin notes template used for Encyclopaedia Britannica, don't really work either. Consequently, I decided that the notes should be formatted as footnotes.
