Author and Publisher?

[edit]

The current version of The Confessions of Nat Turner lists Nat Turner as author, but I don't know that that's the best choice. I haven't researched whether Wikisource has any guidance on who should be credited as an "author," but given that (1) Nat Turner's name only appears in the title; (2) it appears on the face of the work that Gray had final control over what went into it; (3) Gray registered for the copyright; and (4) per Wikipedia (citing NatGeo) some historians doubt the accuracy of Gray's portrayal of Turner, it seems to me that it's much more appropriate to credit Gray as the author.

Regarding the publisher, the title page states "PUBLISHED BY THOMAS R. GRAY," with Lucas & Deaver listed as the "printer." I generally think of a publisher as the publishing house that prints the book so I credited Lucas & Deaver as the publisher for now, assuming that the terminology used on the title page doesn't reflect our use today, but don't have any strong opinions (or certainly any specialized knowledge) about historical conventions or how to treat them on Wikisource so I figured I should flag the issue. Style Guide

[edit]

For consistency, I'm using {{Dhr|2em}}{{rule|8em}}{{Dhr|2em}} as the divider between section titles and their main text. Biggins (talk) 19:22, 15 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
