Chitty, (Hon.) Sir Joseph William, a justice of High Court of Justice (Queen's Bench), Chancery Division, since 1881, knighted 7 Dec., 1881, an Etonian, Vinerian scholar and fellow of Exeter Coll., Oxon, 1852, M.A., Balliol Coll., Oxon, 1854, M.P. Oxford 1880–1, major of Inns of Court volunteers 1869–77, a student of Lincoln's Inn 15 Nov., 1851 (then aged 23), called to the bar 30 April, 1856, Q.C. 1874, bencher 2 Nov., 1875 (2nd son of Thomas Chitty, of London, special pleader); born ⁠, 1828; married 7 Sept., 1858, Clara Jessie, daughter of late Rt. Hon. Sir Frederick Pollock, Bart., lord chief baron, and has issue (see Foster's Baronetage).
