Fairbairn, Sir Andrew, M.P., M.A., St. Peter's Coll., Camb., 1853, B.A., thirty-seventh wrangler 1850, M.P. Yorkshire West Riding, East Division, since 1880, chairman of engineering firm of Fairbairn, Naylor, Macpherson and Co. (Limited), Leeds, J.P., D.L. Yorkshire West Riding, J.P. Leeds, sometime capt. Yorkshire hussar yeomanry cavalry and major 7th West Riding rifle volunteers, mayor of Leeds 1866-8, chairman of Leeds School Board 1871-8, a royal commissioner of the Paris Exhibition 1868, educated at Geneva and Glasgow, knighted 29 Aug., 1868, a student of the Inner Temple 26 Jan., 1848 (then aged 19), called to the bar 30 April, 1852 (only son of Peter Fairbairn, Esq., of Leeds); born 5 March, 1828; married 6 Nov., 1862, Clara Frederica, dau. of Sir John Lambton Loraine, 10th bart. (see Foster's Baronetage).
