Hardcastle, Joseph Alfred, M.P., M.A. (scholar), Trin. Coll., Camb., 1841, D.L. Surrey, J.P. Essex, Norfolk, and Suffolk, M.P. Bury St. Edmunds since 1880 and 1857-74, Colchester 1847-52, a student of the Inner Temple 2 Dec., 1837 (then aged 22), called to the bar 11 June, 1841 (eldest son of Alfred Hardcastle, Esq., of Hatcham House, Surrey); born 15 Sept., 1815; married 1st, 24 March, 1840, Frances, only child of late W. H. Lambirth, Esq.; she died 16 June, 1865; he married 2ndly, 8 July, 1869, (Hon.) Mary Scarlett Campbell, dau. of John, 1st Lord Campbell, lord chancellor, by his wife Mary, Baroness Stratheden (see Foster's Peerage).
