Heywood, James, F.S.S., F.R.S., F.G.S., F.R.G.S., M.A., Trin. Coll., Camb., 1860, senior optime 1833, M.P. North Lancashire 1847-57, was instrumental in securing the abolition of religious tests at matriculation, J.P., D.L. Lancashire, author of History of University Subscription Tests 1853, The Early Cambridge Statutes 1855, Academical Reform and University Representation, etc., a student of the Inner Temple 17 Dec., 1829 (then aged 19), called to the bar 4 May, 1838 (5th son of Nathaniel Heywood, late of Manchester, banker, dec.); born 28 May, 1810; married 11 June, 1853, Annie, widow of Gustav Albert Escher, Esq,, of Zurich, dau. of John Kennedy, Esq., of Ardwick Hall, co. Lanc, and of Knockalling and Knockreoch, co. Kirkcudbright; she died 17 July, 1872, leaving an only dau. (see Foster's Baronetage).
