Manning, Sir William Montagu, LL.D., puisne judge Sydney, New South Wales, since 1876, chairman Sydney quarter sessions 1837-44, solicitor-general of New South Wales 1844-8, 1849-56, acting judge of supreme court 1848-9, attorney-general 1856-8, in 1860, and 1868-70, member of Mixed Legislative Council 1851, member of Legislative Council 1861-76, chancellor of Sydney Univ. since 1878, author of Notes of Proceedings in Electoral Revision Courts, Nevile and Mannings Reports in Court of King's Bench 1832-7, knighted 18 Feb., 1858, a student of Lincoln's Inn 24 Nov., 1827 (then aged 17), called to the bar 23 Nov., 1832 (2nd son of John Edye Manning, Esq., Lyne Grove, Surrey); born 7 March, 1811; married 1st, 5 Feb., 1836, Emily Anne, dau. of Edward Wise, Esq., of High Grove, Isle of Wight; she died , ; he married 2ndly, 6 June, 1849, Eliza Anne, dau. of Very. Rev. William Sowerby, dean of Goulburn, New South Wales.
