Tomkins, Frederick James, D.C.L. Heidelberg Univ. with highest honours Oct., 1858, M.A., Univ. Coll., London, 1847 (B.A., honours 1845), and a member of Convocation, professor of Greek and principal of Gorham Coll., Liverpool, Nova Scotia, 1850-6, professor of mathematics and natural philosophy in Dalhousie Government Coll. 1856-7, held briefs in the cases arising from the Tammany Hall frauds New York and the Jamaica riots, a member of the South-eastern circuit, author of The Institutes of the Roman Law 1867, Compendium of the Modern Roman Law, Commentaries of Gaius: Translation and Annotations 1869, Modern Roman Law 1871, Jewels in Ebony, a student of Lincoln's Inn 4 Nov., 1857 (then aged 42), called to the bar 30 April, 1862 (4th son of William Tomkins, of Watford, Herts); born 11 Dec., 1814; married 15 June, 1834, Catherine Mary, eldest dau. of William Hall, Esq., of Sutton, Surrey, and has issue.
