NOTES TO CANTO VII.




1 The mistral, or north-west wind, which, especially since the removal of the forests at the mouth of the Rhone, blows down the valley with great violence.

2 Tourtihado, a cake baked in the form of a crown, and made of fine paste, sugar, eggs, and anise-seed.

3 "The while hen's egg," a proverbial expression for something rare and precious.
