ZENA, Polk County. Zena is a community in the southeastern part of Eola Hills. It was named for Arvazena Cooper, wife of Daniel Jack- son Cooper. The Coopers moved to this place in 1863 and lived there until 1875, when they moved to Salem. Mrs. Cooper was living in The Dalles in 1927. This information was furnished by Norman Cooper of The Dalles, a son of D. J. Cooper.
Zigzag RIVER, Clackamas County. This stream, a tributary of Sandy River, was named in pioneer days because of its crooked alignment. The Barlow Road ran along its banks for several miles. The name Zigzag has come to be applied to Zigzag Glacier on Mount Hood, and also to Zigzag Mountain and Zigzag Canyon north of the river. The form Zig Zag is wrong. See decision of USBGN. For discussion of the name Zigzag, see OHQ, volume XIX, page 75, where it is held that the use of the name for a stream east of Mount Hood is improbable.
Zion, Lane County. Zion post office operated for more than a decade in the Lost Creek Valley south of Dexter. It was named because of the proximity of Mount Zion just to the east. Mount Zion was named in pioneer days by some biblical enthusiast, but the writer does not know by whom. Mount Zion has an elevation of 2660 feet and is a prominent point. Zion post office was established March 11, 1899, with Thomas H. Hunsaker postmaster. The office was finally closed November 30, 1913, and the business turned over to Dexter. There is still a Zion School in the Lost Creek Valley.
ZOLLNER CREEK, Marion County. Robert Zollner settled near this stream in pioneer days and it was named for him. Zollner Creek flows into Pudding River northwest of Mount Angel.
ZOSEL Hill, Marion County. Zosel Hill is about five miles southwest of Salem. It has an elevation of about 600 feet. It was named for William Zosel, a land owner nearby.
ZUMWALT, Wallowa County. Zumwalt got its name from Henry Zumwalt, a local resident. The community is northeast of Enterprise. The post office was established August 25, 1903, with Josie Zumwalt first postmaster.
