last day’s sight-seeing in Canton. The shops were all shut, and such a thing as a street lamp is unknown in China. Our coolies groped their way through the dark streets, compelling the porters to open some of the heavily barred wooden gates, which are closed at night to cut off communication between the different wards. When at last I reached my hospitable quarters at "Charmine," I felt that I had left behind the dark, hideous barbarism of the East, and, almost by enchantment, had reached the bright and cheerful civilization of the nineteenth century.
