viii cataloguing is explained in Chapter IV. The concept of 'reference' is presented in Chapter V. The pro cedures involved in the library routine are enumerat ed in the final chapter. Specimen card forms and an exhaustive glossary of technical terms enrich the book. The majority of the works without the aid of which this book could not have been published are listed in the selected bibliography appended. The reader whose intellectual curiosity has been stimu lated may profitably refer to any or all of them. For granting permission to publish this book the author is deeply grateful to the authorities of the University of Madras, especially to Dr. A. L.
