A native of Yung-chia in Chehkiang, who graduated second on the list of chin shih and soon distinguished himself by defending Chu Hsi on his impeachment by jj^ ^ Lin P^. In 1194 he took part in the plot to supersede the Emperor Euang Tsung, and upon the accession of Ning Tsnng in 1195 he was associated with ^ ^ j^ Chao Ju-ytl in the gofemment. In 1206 and following years he succeeded in checking the inyading fbrees of the Chin^ Tartars; and by a system of military setUemente io the valleys of the Yang-tsse and Huai rivers, the latter of which he fortified with a chain of towers 100 miles long, he restored confidence and induced the people to return to their homes.
