breaks the wings of each bird as he catches it, it is

משתמרת who guards the Law (takes care not to forget

Nif. נשמר same, to be on one's guard. Ib. מקום כל
וכ׳ ואל פן השמר שנאמר wherever the Scripture has the
words, 'be on thy guard, lest, or 'be on thy guard that
not, it is a prohibitive law; ib. וכ׳ ופן השמר ׳be on thy
guard' and lest' make two prohibitions. Ib. 36b השמר
לאו דלאו hishshamer followed by a negative is a pro-
hibitory law; עשה דעשה השמר hishshamer connected
with a positive order, is a positive command (v. עשה). --

שמרון, שו׳ (b. h.) Samaria, city and district. Esth. R. to I, 2. Tanh. Vayesheb 2 וכ׳ בש׳ . . . מש׳ ישראל כשגלו when the Israelites were exiled from Samaria, Sennaheribo sent his servants and settled them in S. to raise taxes for the kings. Num. R. s. 10a (ref. to Am. VI, 2) ציון זה וש׳ these kingdoms refers to Zion and Samaria (Judah and Israel); a. fr.

שמרוני m. (b. h.) Samaritan. - Pl. שמרונים. Tanh. Vayesheb 2 למלחמה הש׳ עליהן באו the Samaritans went to war with them; 'ש נקראו . . היו נשש׳ וכי were they Samaritans? were they not Cutheans? But they are call- ed Samaritans from the city of Samaria; Yalk. Kings 234; a. e.
