זוף I (cmp. זוב) to drip, be viscid. - V. זיף I a. זפת. Pi. זייף 1) to make thick, viscid; to adulterate. Sot. 48b (expl. זיפים דבש) בו שמזייפין דבש a honey which is used for mixing with other substances in order to make them appear viscid (differ. in comment.). -- 2) to be unctuous, false, treacherous. Ib. (ref. to זיפים, Ps. LIV, 2) אדם בני המזייפין Ar. (Rashi שמזייפין; ed. דבריהם המ׳) people who are unctuous (ed. who make their words unctuouus, i. e. insinuate themselves). Sifre Deut. 26 בתורה משה שז׳ דומה it seems as if Moses was not sincere in writing the Loaw (smoothing over his own shortcomings). -- 3) to falsify, forge; to prove the fallocy of, refute; to denounce as false, deny. Y. Sot. VII, 21c וכ׳ תורתכם זייפתם ye (Samaritans) have falsified your Torah (adding שכם to Deut. XI, 30) but to no purpose; Bab. ib. 33b. -- Ib. ספרי זייפתי זה בדבר וכ׳ with this argument I showed the fallacy of the books of the Samaritans; Snh. 90b. Ib. וכ׳ ולא זייפתם Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note, ed. תורתכם ז׳) ye disputed (our evidence from Deut. XXXI, 16), but it does not avail you (for the idea of resurrection is evident fronm Numm. XV, 31). -- Part. pass. מזוייף, f. מזוייפת false, informal, faulty (of documents signed by disqualified witnesses). Gitt. 10b וכ׳ מתיכו מז׳ (גט) a document which has its re- jection in itself (being signed by disqualified witnesses, although it wonld have been valid without the signature of witnesses) is illegal; B. Bath. 170a; a. e. -- Ib. ונמצאת מז׳ עדותן and their evidence (signature) is found out to be informal (because they are disqualified). Hithpa. הזדייף to be falsifed. forged. Gitt. II, 4 מפני לה׳ יכול שהוא because (on such writing material) forgery (erasing and writing over) is made easy. זוף ch. same. -Pa. זייף to falsify, forge. Targ. Jer. VIII, 8 למזייפא ed. Lag. (ed. לזיפא). - Keth. 36b לי זייפו forge for me (erase &c.). Ib. וכתב ז׳ זיופי he practiced imitation of handwriting and then wrote himself. B Bath. 163a וכ׳ וכתב מזייף דילמא he may imitate and insert (over the signatures) whatever he desires. זור I (b. h.; cmp. דור) to go around, with מר or הימי to turn away, be estranged; to deviate. Yoma 72b הימנו זרה the Law departs from him (is forgotten); v. זר. Midr. Till. to Ps. XC, b (play on זרמתם, b.) ותמו מתו זרו they deviated (from the Law) &c.; וכ׳ מתורתיך זרו;Yalk. Ps. 841.

זור II m. (preced. v. זיר) crown, wreath; (bot.) cap- sule. Tosef. Maasr. III, 14 המקיף אחד ז׳ אלא לו שאין כל וכ׳ (ed. Zuck. דיר I) (a garlick plant) which has only one capsule of seeds crowning the stem; Y. ib. V, end, 52a חור (corr. acc.).
