חומר II (הומר Ar.) m. (חמר I; v. P. Sm. 1310 s. v. חומרא) [whatever oins or is joinedt] bead, little ball (bulla) hung around the neck; jewel, clasp, seal; trnsf. ח׳ כמין like a jewel, i. e. a precious ethical principle (cmp. Prov. I, 9, a. מרגליתא),a symbol. Kidd. 22b דורש היה ח׳ כמין . . . interpreted this in a symbolical way (giving the practical Biblical law about perforating the slave's ear an ethical signification); Mekh. חומרא II m. (v. חומר II) joint, knot, bead, amulet. Kidd. 73b וכ׳ ח׳ תלי Ar. (ed. חומרי רמי) if the child is found with an amulet (beads, by which the mother in- timated the hope of future identification) . . . it is not considered a foundling (v. אסופי). -- Pl. חומרי. חומש m. (b. h. חמש; חמש) 1) one fifth, esp. one fifth of the value to be added as fine on restoring misappro- priated property or redeeming dedicated property (Lev. V, 16; 24; XXVII, 27). B. Kam.
