חטף (b. h.; cmp. חטט, a. גזל with גזז) 1) to seize, rob. Y. Ber. I, 3c bot. (ref. to I Kings VIII, 54) ככפים וכ׳ בבנין חטפו שלא הללו ed. Krot. (oth. ed. נטפו, prob. נטנפו, v. טנף) like those hands which did not rob anything at building the Temple. Lam. R. to I, 1 ממנה וחטפו and snatched it (the letter of divorce) out of her hands; a. fr. -- Koh. R. toVII, 26, v. חטב. - 2)(cmp. Lat. carpo)to do a thing with haste, esp. (v. Ber. 35a sq., Tosef. ib. IV, 1) to break without benediction. Tosef. Pes. X, 9 לתינוק מצה חוטפין matzah is distributed among the children before the regular turn in the Passover ceremonies, in order that they may not fall asleep; Pes. 109a (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 50; oth. opin. in comment.). Part. pass. חטוף, .. חטופה snatched, abrupt. M. Kat. 28a ח׳ מיתה פתאם מת if one dies suddenly, it is called an abrupt death (snatched by death); Treat S'mah. ch. III ח׳ מיתה . . . לארבעה after four or five days of sickness, it is called &c.; v. דחף. -- ח׳ אמן, v. אמ II. Hithpa. התהטף to be snattched, hurried. Y. Ber. VIII, end, 12c he who says a hurried Amen' -- שנותיו יתחטפו his years will be hurried (he will die an untimely, sudden death, v. supra); Bab. ib. 47a.
חטף, חטיף ch. same, 1) to seize, snatch. Targ. Jud. XXI, 21. Targ. IKings XX, 33 מיניה וחטפוהא they snatched theword hastily from him (h. text הממנו ויחלטו); a. e. - B. Bath. 33b, sq. מיניה חטפהה דמיחטף that he took it from him forcibly. Hull. 133a מתנתא חטיפנא הוה I used to take the priest's gifts eagerly (v. חבב). Erub. 54a וכ׳ ואכול חטוף make haste and eat &c. (enjoy life, while you live). -- 2) to do violence, strain (the text), to mis- interpret. Targ. Ez. XXII, 26. -- 3) (of animals of prey) to tear. Targ. II Esth. I, 2 חטפין דובין (read; דיבין) the wolves (on Solomon's throne) made an attempt to tear (the false witness). Ib. וכ׳ לבהון למחטוף, as if to tear the hearts &c. Pa. חטף same. Ib. (of hawks). thpe. אתחטף to be robbed, be snatched. Targ. Prov. XIII, 2. - Y. Kidd I, 60b top מתחטפא והיא and it is taken by force (confiscated).

חטפא, חטפה v. חטיפה.
חטפיתא, חטיפי׳ f. (preced. wds.) name of an un- clean bird (h. תחמס), ostrich(?). Targ. Y. Lev. XI, 16; Deut. XIV, 15. חטר 1) to cut off (denom. חוטרא I, twig, cmp. גזע &c.). -- 2) to fence in (cmp. גדר, גזר &c.). Targ. Job XIX, 8. -- Denom. חוטרא II. -- 3) (denom. of חוטרא I) to whip, strike. Sabb. 67a חטרתיה דחמרא בלועא (Ms. M. חטבתיה) with an ass' jaw I should strike him. Pa. חטר to prorride with a vertical stroke (חוטרא). Men. 29b דחר״ת לגגיה להו דחטרי (Ms. M. ליה חטרי דהוו Pe.) they used to put a vertical stroke on the roof of the Heth.

חי m. (b. h.; חיה) 1) living, alive; living creature; healthy. Ber. 27b וכ׳ החי יכול מת והוא חי אני אלמלא if I were alive and he dead, the living one might give the lie to the dead. Ib. V, 5 חי זה this one is destined to live (recover). Sabb. 94a, a. e. עצמו את נושא החי a living being carries itself (the carrying of a living being on the Sabbath is not unlawful). Ib. X, 5 במטה החי את (he who carries) a living person on a couch; a. v. fr. --אבר־ החי מן, v. אבר. -- Pl. חיים, חיין. Ab. IV, 22 לידון והח׳ and the living are destined to be judged. Sabb. 94a ח׳ בין שחוטין ובין whether alive or slaughtered; a. fr. -- Ab. Zar. 5b (ref. to החי, Gen. VI, 19) וכ׳ ראשי שחיין the ends of whose limbs live (exist). -- 2) in natural condition, raw (opp. בשול); unmixed (opp. מזוג). Snh. 70a חי בשר raw meat, חי יין unmixed wine. Ab.
