חמא m. (חמם; cmp. חמם) radish. Ab. Zar. 28b bot. לחמה ח׳ Ms. M. a. Ar. (ed. חמה) radishes are good for fever. Pes. 116a וכ׳ ח׳ דחסא קפא against the injurious effects of lettuce apply radishes &c.
חמאה f. (b. h.; v. חמי) [pressed, thick,] (ream or butter. Ber. 63b (ref. to Prov. XXX, 33) תורה של ח׳ the cream of the Law (sound knowledge). B. Mets. 86b בשכר וכ׳ ח׳ as a reward for the offer of cream and milk (Gen. XVIII, 8).

חמד (b. h.; cmp. חמם) 1) [to be hot,] to desire, covet; to be carnally excited. Nidd. 20b חמדתיו (or חמ׳ Pi.) lI had a desire for his embrace. Midr. Till. to Ps. XIX, 11 חמדן מי which (of the two) holds them desirable; Yalk. b. 676 [read החומדין מי. Mekh. Yithro, Bahod. s. 8 שאתה וכ׳ חומד that you may desire his daughter for your son; ח׳ בדבור expressing a desire by words (without thinking of means to obtain the object of his desire). [Ib. ed. Weiss, לחמוד סופו התאוה אם if one desires (what belongs to his neighbor), he will finally covet it (think of means to obtain it). Ib. וכ׳ סופו ח׳ אם if he covets, he will finally nse force and rob. חמדה f. (b. h.; preced. wds.) 1) same. Sabb. 152a (expl. אביונה, Koh. XII, 5) ח׳ ו that means the sexual appetite; (Koh. R. to l. c. תאוה). -- 2) desirability, desirable object, prccious gift. Tanh.
