כי (b. h.; v. כ־) 1) like. Sot. 35b סיד כי like lime. Y. Yeb. XVI, end, 16a חיה כי like a lying-in woman; a. fr. -- 2) when. Ex. R. s. 9, beg. (ref. to Ex. VII, 9) . . . ידבר אם וכ׳ כי אלא it does not read, 'if Pharaoh . . ., but when. . . he will say so. R. Hash. 3a, v. אי II. -- 3) so, thus. Y. Hag. III, 77b המעשה היה וכי and thus it came to pass. כיבא m. (preced.) pain, sore, v. כאבא. Targ. Job V, 18;a. e. -- B. Kam. 46b, v. כאב I. Lam. R.to II, 1לכ׳. . . אית עייבא there is a place where they call a sore ayba (heav- iness), v. כאב I PPa. --- Esp. ulcer, ulceration (mostly as a. collective noun). Sabb. 62b (ref. to Is. III, 24) שופרי חלף כ׳ instead of beauty ulcers; [Kimhl quotes כואה; Ms. M. כיאורא כיבא, combining two versionsl. Kidd. 39b שיחנא וכ׳ scabs and ulcers. כיבא m. (כבב) roast over thorn-fire. Snh. 70a כבשר וכ׳ כ׳ (Ar. כיבי pl.) like the meat roasted over a thorn- fire which thieves eat.
כיבוד m. (כבד) 1) doing honor to; respect, reverence. Peah I, 1 ואם אב כ׳ filial respect. Sifra K'dosh. beg.. Kidd. 31b, a. e. (ref. to Lev. XIX, 3, a. Ex. XX, 12) איזהו כ׳ ואיזהו מורא what constitutes filial fear (reverence), and what filial respect -- Pesik. R. s. 23 - 24; Y. Kidd. I, 61b top וכ׳ הכ׳ לחצי אדיין he has not come up yet to half of the filial duties which the Law implies; a. fr. ---2) sweep- ing, cleansing. Nidd. VII, 2 (56a) כבוד שעת עד up to the time of sweeping; ib. 3a הכי׳ שעת עד. Treat. S'mah. ch. XI; a. e. -- Pl. כיבודים, כב׳. Nidd. 56b כבודיהם בשעת when they are being swept.
כיבוי m. (כבה) extinguishing. Sabb. 120b כ׳ גרם caus- ing extinction indirectly. Y. ib. XVII, end, 15d [read:] בכ׳ צורך לו יש he has use for (profits by) the extinction.

כיבוש m. (כבש) 1) conquest, dominion. Y. Hor. III, 48c top הארן בכ׳ for the conquest of Palestine. Gitt. 8b (ref. to Syria) כ׳ . . . יחיד כ׳ the conquest of an individual (David) is not called a (national) conquest (so as to give the land the sacred character of Palestine); ib. 47a, a. fr. -- [Gen. R. s. 17 לכבוש, v. כיגוס.]-- 2) =כבש 2, ascent, grade. Y. Erub. II, 24b bot.[read:] וכ׳ מכיבושו . . כבשים כיבושי כלל all grades of ascents in the Temple . m .m . ., with the ex- ception of the grade of the altar--bridge which was at the rate of about ten handbreadths to three handbreadths and one third of a finger's width (of vertical height;i. e. 10 to 3 ב), v. כבש. - Pl. כיבושים, כיבושין, constr. כיבושי, v. supra. -- 3) (only in pl.) means of subduing one's pride; reproof; evil prediction, penitence. Pesik. V'zoth, p. I97a וכיבושיהן הן they (the blessings) but also the reproofs con- nected therewith (Deut. ch. XXXI); Yalk. Deut. 550. Gen. R. s. 66 (ref. to Gen. XXVII, 28) [read] לך ויתן ברכות יתןלך כיבושיהן; Yalk.
