כינוי, כנוי m. (כנה) by-name, surname; attribute, substituted word. Snh. VII, 5 בכ׳ . . . דנין the witnesses are examined by using a substitute for the Divine Name (v. יוסי). Sot. VII, 6 בכינויו ובמדינה . . . . במקדש in the Temple the Divine Name is pronounced as it is written, in the country (outside the Temple) by its substitute (Adonai).
