מסיק II m. (נסק; sub. מפים &c.) one who levies con- tributions, in gen. a Roman collector, oppressor (interch.. with מציק). Tosef. Ohol. XVI, 13 (ed. Zuck. מציק); Y. Pes. I, 27c; (Bab. ib. 9a, a. Ab. Zar. 42a מצ׳). -- Pl. משיקין. B. Kam. X, 5 מ׳ ונטלוהו and government officers confiscated it. Ib. 11 6b וכ׳ מצ׳. מס׳ דאמר מאן he who reads massikin is not at fault, nor is he who reads m'tsikia (ref. for the latter to מצוק, Deut. XXVIII, 57, for the former to Chald. סקאה for צלצל, ib. 42). Y. מסירה f. (מסר) 1) harnessing, taking possession of a working animal by an act resembling harnessing. Kidd. I, 4, v. מוסרה. Tosef. ib. I, 8 ומוסירהה. . לו מסר מ׳ היא אאיזו (ed. Zuck. ומוסירה, Var. במוסרה) what is m'sirahh He(the seller) hands him (the buyer) a bit and he harnesses it (the animal); Kidd. 22b וכ׳ אחזה במ׳ כיצד what is bim- sirah (Kidd. I, 4) He seizes its hoof, hair &c., a. fr. -- 2) handing, delivery. Gitt. 9b, a. fr. מ׳ עדי, v. כרת; a. fr. - 3) levy. Cant. R. to IV, 4 (ref. to Num. מסך m. (b. h.; סכך II to be clear; cmp. מזג) clarifed, mixed drink. Ex. R. s. 42, end (play on מסכה, Ex. XXXII, 8) ה׳ מעביר שהוא מס״ך מנין קנטרוין ק״כ the gold in the calr weighed 120 centenaria, corresponding to the numerical value of mesekh (drink) which removes He (the Lord, i. e. leads to godlessness).
מסך m. (b. h.; סכך I) web, screen, curtain. Num. R. s. 6 וכ׳ שער מסך the curtain for the gate of the court. Yalk. Ex. 372; a. e.

מסכה I f. (b. h.; נסך) molten image. Snh. 103b (play on Is. XXVIII, 20 וכ׳ והמסכה) מ׳ לו תעשה הים מי כנד כונס צרה should a molten image be made a rival to him ׳who gathers the waters of the sea together like heaps'?; Num. R. s. 7; Yoma 9b. Sifra K'dosh., beg. (idols are called) מ׳ ניסוכים שהם ע״׳ש massekhah, because they are cast.
מסכה II f. (b. h.; סכך I) web, garment. Ex. R. s. 42, end (ref. to Ex. XXXII, 8) וכ׳ משתי לדורות הסכתן רעה מ׳ a bad web have you woven for future generations (follows the Chaldaic translation). -- V. מסכת.
*מסכה III (homiletic play, = כ מסי, v. אסי) thus healing. Ex. R. s. 42, end [read:] כך . . . הוא סורסי לשון וכ׳ אותן מרפא אני (v. סורסי) it is a contraction; the Lord says, Shall I thus cure them?, as we read (Ex. XXXII, 8-9); hey have made themselves a molten calf' . . . and the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stifnecked people' (i. e. it is incurable).

*מסכן m. (next w.) poverty. Cant. R. to I, 4 (inter- preting מסכני, v. מסכן II; strike out אחר דבר) ממסכני נרוצה אחריד out of my poverty, we shall run after thee.
מסכן I m. (b. h.; סכן I) poor man;(adj.) scanty, scarce; trnsf. mean. Midr. Prov. ch. XXII בחייו מסוכן שהוא מ׳ the poor man is called misken, because he is sparsely supplied with means of livelihood; Lev. R. s. 34 בזוי שהוא מפני לכל he is called misken, because he is despised of all men (ref. to Koh. IX, 16). Ruth R. to I, 1 (ref. to Koh. l. c.) שהוא מי מ׳ מהו אלא היתה בזויה מ׳ שהיה ד׳ע של חכמתו וכי וכ׳ בדבריו בווי was the wisdom of R. Akiba who was a. poor man despised? But what does misken here mean ? One who proves himself mean by his own words (not practicing what he preaches); Koh. R. tto l. c. [read] אאלא בדבריו מ׳ שהוא ה; Yalk. Ruth 598 בדבריו דמ׳ ההוא אלא בזויה (insert חכמתו). Koh. R. l. c. שממסכין מי אלא מ׳ אין דבריו (not שמסכין) behold, a misken is none but he who makes his words appear mean. Ib. to IX, 15 קורא ולמה וכ׳ ואין הבריות בכל מצוי שאינו מ׳ אותו and why does the text call him (the good genius in man) misken (scarce)? Because he is rare among men, and (mmean) because the majority of people do not listen to him; ib. to IV, 13; a. fr. -- Yalk. ib. 979; Y'lamd. to Num.
