ספיר, m. (b. h.; ספר) 1) sapphire. Ex. R. s. 38, end על וכ׳ היה ס׳ on the sapphire (in the high priest's breast- plate) the name of Issachar was engraven. Pesik. Aniya, p. 135b חסר לא והס׳. נבקע the anvil was split, the ham- mer was broken in two, but the sapphire remained in- tact. Lam. R. to IV, 7, v. גזרה; a. e. -- V. סמפירינון. - 2) sap- pir, name of a species of beans. Kil. I, 1, expl. Y. ib. 27a top פושונה (R. S. to Kil. l. c. פיישונא).

ספירה f (b. h.; ספר) 1) counting. Nidd. 73a לס׳ ראוי fit to begin with it the count (of the seven days of puri- fication); ib. תזוב כי או לסספירת for the count required in the case described Lev. XV, 26, sq. Sifra Emor, Par. 10, ch. XII (ref. to Lev. XXIII, 16) וכ׳ לא ספירתם כל all they have to count (from Passover to the Feast of Weeks) shall be no more than fifty days. Ib. וכ׳ בב'ד תלויה שהיא ס׳ a count which depends on the court (deciding on the New Moons), to exempt the weekly Sabbath, טספירתה אדם בכל which everybody counts; Men. 65b; a. fr. -- Pl. ספירות. ספל m. (ספל to scrape, cut out) 1) (b. h.; cmp. סף) bowl, basin. Kidd. 31a וכ׳ בסס מים להן הטל pour water into a. bowl for them (to drink from) &c., v. קעקע I. Nidd. 27a; Y. ib. III, 51a וכ הס׳ את במוציא when he carries away the basin (with the after-birth) &c. Oant. R. to I, 1; Koh. R. to I, 1 (ref. to יקה, Prov. XXX, 1) בשעתו שנתמלא הזה כס׳ וכ׳ like a bowl which is filled in due time and emptied in due time, so did &c.; Num. R. s. 10; a. e. -- Pl. ספלים, ספלין. Sabb. 129b the rich keep the after-birth שמן של בס׳ in ba- sins filled with oil; Tosef. ib. XV (XVI), 3 בסופלי (corr. acc.). Ber. 44a טרית ספלי basinfuls of salted fish. ספן (cmp. צפן, צפה) [to look up to, look out for,] 1) to respect; to care for, mind Y. Snh. X, beg. 27c שאומר זהו סופנה ואיני... that is he who says, there is a Torah, but I do not mind its authority; Y. Peah I, 16b סובלה (corr. acc.). Tosef. Sot. III, 14 וכ׳ ספנוהו ולא (Var. סנפוהו, corr. acc.) they minded him not, because he was merely a comm- mon soldier (ולייר). Sifre Deut. 33 (ref. to היום, Deut. VI, 6) סופנה אדם שאין . . יהו שלא Rashi ed. Berl. a. l. (ed. סופרה, corr. acc.; Ms. 3 צופנה, v. ed. Fr. note) that they be not in thy eyes like an antiquated ordinance which no- body minds; Yalk.
