פתח m. (b. h.; פתח) opening, door, gate. Keth. IV, 3 (ref. to Deut. XXII, 21) וכ׳ האב בית פ׳ לא לה אין if she (the faithless betrothed) has no paternal house door. Y. Sabb. VII, 9c top חורה של סיתחה על . . . הוא ניכר it can be seen that this man has never passed the gate of the Law (never studied). Koh. R. to III, 11 עד פתוח הפ׳ זה התהום this gate (verse used as introductory text, v. פתח) opens to the deep, i.. e. leads tto deep refdection. Gen. R. s. 85 (ref. to עינים פתח, Gen. XXXVIII, 14) בפ׳ עיניה תלה וכ׳ העינים שכל she lifted up her eyes to the gate tto which all eyes are directed (she prayed to the Lord). Ib. s. 38 תשובה של פ׳ . . . פתח the Lord opened to them the gate of repentance; a. fr. - Euphem. פתוח פ׳ absence of שir- ginity Keth. 9b פ׳ פ׳ טענת, contrad. to דמים טענת, v. דם. פתחא, פי׳ ch. same. Targ. Ez. XL, 38. Targ. I Chr. XVII, 25 דפומא פ׳ opening of the mouth, courage to speas; a. fr. -- Snh. 110a (ref. to Num. XVI, 30) פ׳ לקרובי the creation consisted only in bringing the gate (of Ge- henna) nearer. -- Meg. 10a, sq., וכ׳ להאי ׳ לה פתח took his opening text for this (Purim) lesson from here. Ex. R. s. 1 קרא להאי פ׳ פתחין took as text the following verse; a. fr. - Ned. 22b לנפשיה פ׳ פתח offered himself a reason for absolution from his vow.
פתחון, פי׳ m. constr. (b. h.; פתח) פה פ׳ opening of the mouth, point of attack, fault-fnding excuse for mrong- doing. Sifra Vayikra, N'dab., ch. II, Par. 2 פ׳ ליתן שלא לרדות למינין פה in order not to give heretics (believers in plurality) occasion for rebellion. Gen. R. s. 8 מקום בכל וכ׳ פה פ׳ מוצא שאתה wherever (in the Scriptural text) there is an opportunity for heretics (to find pluralistic allusions), you will find the refutation next to it. Ib. (ref. to נעשה, Gen. I, 26) Moses said, Lord of the world, מה מפני למינים פה פפפ נותן אתה why wilt thou furnish a point of attack to heretics? Lev. R. s. 20; a. fr.
פתחיה (b. h.) Pethahia, name of a priest (and a. priestly family) during the days of the Second Temple. Shek. V, 1 הקינין על פ׳ P. had the supervision of the sacri- ficial birds. Ib. מרדבי זה פ׳ P. is the same as Mordecai, v. פתח; Men. 65a.
פתי, פתה (b. h.; cmp. פתח) 1) [to be open, wide,] to be accessible to infuences, be compliant. Ex. R. s. 21 (ref. to Hos. VII, 11) וכ׳ פותה כיונה הם אצלי towards me they are like a tame dove, whatever I decree over them, they do and obey, but towards the nations of the world they are intractable like wild beasts. -- 2) to open; trnsf. to inftuence, persuade, entice. Snh. 38a (play on פתי מי Prov. IX, 16) וכ׳ לזה פתאו מי who persuaded this man (Adam)? A woman spoke to him; (differ. in Yalk. Prov. 94 3). -- [lum. R. s. 7 ופותין, read;ופותתין, v. פתת.] Pi. פיתה [o open the heart of,] to persuade; 1) (in a good sense) to win, conguer. Lev. R. s. 29 (ref. to Ps. LXXXIX, 16) וכ׳ לפתות מכירין שהם they know how to win the favor of their Creator &c.; (Midr. Till. to Ps. LXXXI לרצות); Yalk. Ps. 840; Pesik. Bahod., p. 152a. Y. Kidd. III, 64c ttop וכ׳ וכופין . . . אותו מפתים they (the court) persuade him to give her a letter of divorce, but they force him to &c.; a. fr. -- Gen. R. s. 71 פיתיתי, v. infra. - 2) to gratify; to mislead by gratifying; to deceive. Lev. R. s. 6, beg. (ref. to והפתית, Prov. XXIV, 28) שפתיתם מאחר וכ׳ בסיני אותו after you gratified him at Sinai, saying (EEx. XXIV, 7) &c. Ib. וכ׳ בשפתיך שפתית מאחר after thou hast gratified with thy lips (promised to appear as witness) and caused him to go to law; a. e. - Deut. R. s. 7 (play on תיםrובמו, Deut. IV, 34) וכ׳ אותם מפתות המכות היו the plagues (by coming at intervals) deceived them (made the Egyptians believe every time that they were relieved for- ever); Midr. Till. to Ps. LXXVVIII, 43 בהן מפיתות ed. Bub. (oth. ed. בהן שפותות; corr. acc.). - 3) to entice. Y. Snh. X, 28d the strong Moabite wine לזנות הגוף מפתה שהוא which opens the body tto lust; Num. R. s.10, a. e., v. פתוגתא; a. fr. - Esp. to seduce. Keth. III, 9 (41a) את פיתיתי האומר וכ׳ if one declares, I have seduced that man's daughter. Ib. 4 נותן המפתה the seducer pays three fines, opp. to אונס; a. fr. - Y. Keth. III, 27b שהפיתתו, read; פיתתו שהיא when she seduced him. Pu. פותה to be persuaded; to be seduced. Gen. R. s. 71; Yalk. ib. 127 פותיתי (not פית׳), v. יסת. - Part. f. מפותה a seduced wosman. Keth. 39b; a. fr. Hithpa. התפתה, Nithpa. נתפתה 1) to be widened. Yalk. Is. 302 וכ׳ ומרחבת . . . מתפתה היא אף it (Gehenna), too, grows every day wider and broader and deeper (with ref. to תפתה, Is. XXX, 33). -- 2) to be persuaded; to be enticed. Gen. R. s. 17 וכ׳ להתסתות נוח האיש מה מפני why is mnn. easily appeased and woman is not ; v. פיוס. -- Num. R. l. c. וזנו נתפתו היין עי through wine they were enticed and. they committed whoredom.
