צערי להו קרי . דידן ותנא וסועדי תנא there is a version,
and they were called the assistants of the Levites'; and
as to our version (צעירי or צוערי), because the voices of
those were fine , therefore he calls them tsgf fre (the
troubles) of the Levites (v. צער). Gen. R. s. 75 של צעידיהם

צעצועים m. pl. (b. h. צעצעים, II Chr. III, 10; צע, cmp. צעיר; cmp. זעטוטי a. דגיר) miniatures, babes, dolls. B. Bath. 99a היו צ׳ מעשה כרובים (not הן, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note , 2) the Oherubs in the Temple had tthe form of babes, v. כמוב I; [Comment. = אצאיםs, v. Rabb. l. c.].
צעק (b. h.; cmp. זעק) to cry; (cmp. צווח) to complain. Mekh. Mishp. s. 18 (ref. to Ex. XXII, 22) שהוא זמן כל יכול וכ׳ צצועקlest you may think, when he cries,Ihear him (takke up his cause), and when he does not cry, I do not &c. B. Kam. 93a הנצעק . . . לצועק לו אוי woe to himm who cries (prays for divine judgment to come down upon his neigh- bor) more than tto him who is cried agalnst. Ib. אאחד וכ׳ לנצעק ואחד לצועק Ms. M. both are included (in Ex. l. c.) as deserving divine punishment, the crier and he who is cried against, only that they (in haaven) hasten to attend to the crier first &c. (differ. vers. quoted in Tosaf.). B. Mets. 75b נענין ואינן צועקין שלשה three persons cry in distress, and are not answered (because they are themselves to blame for their sufferings). Midr. צעקהf. (preced.) cry, complaint. Gitt. 7a לגימא צעקת, v. לגימה. Ex. R. s. 3 וככ צגקתלפני באה לא עתה עדntil now their cry has not come before me, because the destined end (of the captivity) has not yet arrived. R. Hash. 16b וכ׳ צ׳ צדקה . . ארבעה four things cause the evil verdict to be ttorn up (reversed), they are; charity, prayer &c. Deut. R. s. 2 צ׳ (one of the names for prayer); a. fr.
צער (b. h.) 1) to be narrow, slender, young, v. צוער, צעיר. - 2) to be restrained, suffer privation, pain. Taan. 11a, v. infra. Hif. הצעיר to lessen; to subordinate. Gen. R. s. 6 (ref. to הצעיר, Gen. XLVIII, 14) עסקיו את מצעיר שהיה ידי על וכ׳ becanse he subordinated his afairs (was contented with lesser services), he was privileged to be invested with the rights of the firstborn; וכ׳ מצעיר שהוא הגדול if a great man applies himself to minor services, how much more (is he praiseworthy) b-- Part. pass. מועו, q. v. Pi. ציער 1) to narrow, restrain; to infict pain, annoy. Naz. 19a; 22a, a. e. (ref. to Num. VI, 11) צי׳ שלא זה ומה וכ׳ עצמו המצער . . . עצמו if this (Nazarite) who denied himself only the enjoyment of wine is called a sinner,, how much more so he who denies himself all enjoyments of life Taan. 11a וכ׳ עצמו שצי׳ רבינו במשה ... יצער man must suffer (deny himself enjoyments), when the com- munity suffers; for thus we find that Moses affficted him- self (by sitting on a stone, Ex. XVVII, 12) &c.; ib. המצער וכל וכ׳ עם עצמו (Ms. M. עם המצער וכל, insert עצמו, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) and he who afficts himself in sympathy with the community, will be allowed to see the comfort of the community; Yalk. Gen. 148, a. e. המצטער. Snh. 11a לאבא שציערת הוא אתה wast thou the one who annoyed my father (with the smell of galic)? Ab. Hitthpa. הצטער, Nithpa. נצטער to feel pain ; to sufer privation; to grieve, trouble one's self. Yalk. Gen. l. c., a. e., v. supra. Hag. 15b וכ׳ מצטער שאדם בומן when a man suffers (the penalty of the law), what does the Shekhinah say; וכ׳ מצטער הקביה כך אם if the Lord thus grieves over the blood of the wicked (convict), how much more does he grieve over the bblood of the righteous that is shed; Ms. M. 1 וכ׳ אני מצטער כן אם; Ms. M. 2 מצטערני if thus I (he Lord) grieve &c. Succ. 26a, a. e. וכ׳ פטור מצטער he that feels uncomfortable (cold) is exempt from sitting in the Succah (contrad. fr, חולה), Meg. 16a sq. בו יכשל . . בו שנצ׳ דבר אפשר is it possible that this righteous man (doseph) should commit the same wrong from which he himself had suffered (to make distinctions between brothers)?
