שתק (b. h.) to be quiet, silent. Keth. 14b וצווח ממזר ושותק חלל one who cries (protests) when called a bastard, but keeps his peace when called a halal (v. חלל II). Sabb. 3b וכ׳ שש׳ יוסי Iose, who kept silence (when the Roman government was criticised), shall be exiled to Sepphoris. Men. 72a ושתוק פקח הוי be wise and keep thy peace. Gen. R. s. 51 וכ׳ לאברהם שש׳ שתיקה (God remembered to Lot) the silence which he observed towards Abraham when he said &c.; a. fr. Pi. שיתק to cause to be silent, silence, stop. Tosef. Hag. שתקאי m. pl. (preced.) preservers of silence (silenti- arii, v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Prepositus). Ber. 58a תליתאה אתא וכ׳ שש׳ דהוה Vers. in En Ya kob (ed. שתקא קא כי) when the third division marched past, who were the silenti- aril (ordering silence), he (the blind R. Shesheth) said, now the king is coming.
