Ptolemy, 1) King of Adiabene, father of Monobaxus and

מונבו. - 2) king of Egypt (Ptolemy II Philadelphus), dur-
ing whose reign the Septuagint is said to have been
produced. Treat. Sof'rim I, 7 המלך לת׳ . . בחמשה מעשה
וכ׳ it occurred that five elders wrote the Torah in Greek
for King Ptolemy, and that day was as ominous for Israel
as &c. Ib. 8 וכ׳ בת׳ מעשה שוב another time it occurred
that King P. assembled seventytwo elders &c.; Meg. 9a.

*תלמי f. (D~~~~n) nostril; (cmp. חוטם) snout, tube. Tosef. Mikv. IV, 8 וכ׳ הת׳ ומן לת׳ היוצא מעיין spring water that comes out through a snout, and flows from the snout. into a pond.
תלמיד m. (b. h.; למד) scholar, disciple. Y. Shek. III, beg. 47b, a. e. ות׳ חבר; B. Bath. 158b חבר ת׳, v. חבר. Erub. 63a וכ׳ שניהם ותלמידו הרב ובנו האב a father and his son, or a teacher and his pupil have only one vote. Snh. 11a עזרא של תלמידו a disciple (worthy successor) of Eara. Ab. IV, 12 תלמידך כבוד, v. כבוד; a. v. fr. - חכם ת׳, v. תכם. -- Pl. תלמידים. Ib. II, 8. Ib. תלש to tear, pluck, detach. Y. Snh. V, 22c top משום תולש, v. קשש I. Ib. (ref. to Num. XV, 32) שמצאוהו מלמד וכ׳ תולש the text intimates that they found him tear wood (uproot shrubs) out of the ground; Sabb. 96b; Sifre Num. 113. Bets. 3a ויתלוש . . . גזרה we apprehend, lest he may climb up and pluck. B. Kam. VIII, 6 בשערו ת׳ if one plucks his neighbor's hair. Y. Sabb.
