This noblemaa was raised to the chancellorship by Queen MARS-, and held the seals until March, 1565, when he was forced to fly into England for alleged acquiescence in the murder of David Rizzlo. lOis lordship obtaining soon afterwards a psrdon, returned, and was again chancellor under the regency of the Earl of Moray; he was subsequently high-admiral of Scolland; and in 1372, regent of the kingdom. This tide of prosperity ebbing, however, the earl was accused of being accessory to the murder of Lord Darnley, and being arraigned upon that charge, was found guilty, and publicly sxecnted at the Market-Cross of Edinbnrgb, 5 June, 1581, by lbe machine called the Maiden, which he had himself introduced into Scotland. His lordship having no issue, made an entail of the earldom in favour of his nephew, the Earl of Angus; and in ease of failure of issue of that nobleman, then in favour of William Douglas, of Loohieven. After his lordship’s execution and forfeiture, however, the crown immediately conferred the earldom of Morton, upon JORN, Lord Maxwell, grandson of James, 3rd Earl of Morton, who became thus 5th Earl of Horton; but a general act of indemnity passing in 1585, that nobleman was obliged to surrender the earldom to the heir of the entail, in recompense for which the crown crested the earldom of Nithsdale, with precedence from Lord Maxwell’s reeeiviug the earidom of Morton in 1551. On this surrender, the earldom of Horton accordingly devolved upon AmsoursAs.o DougLAs, 0th Earl of Angus, as 6th Earl of Morton (Lord Maxwell being regarded as 5th earl); at whose demies without issue, in 1588, it descended to Sip. WILLIASI DouGLAs, Knt. of Loehleven, as 7th earl of Morton (refer to descendants of Sir Henry Douglas, of Lugton and Lochleven, 3rd son of Sir John Douglas, of Dalkeith). This nobleman so.
